Lashed the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu in Heavy rains
Heavy rains Tuesday lashed the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry due to a low pressure over Sri Lanka and its neighbourhood.
According to a Met official, Sirkhazhi in Nagapattinam district received 14 cm rains while Taragambadi, Rameswaram and Karaikal in Puducherry received 11 cm rain.
He said Cuddallore, Kollidam, Vedaranyam, Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Myladuthurai also received heavy rains.
Rains above 7 cm is classified as heavy and between 3-6 cm is considered as moderate.
For the fourth day in succession, fishermen in Nagapattinam did not venture to the sea. The district administration has declared a holiday Wednesday for educational institutions there.
Schools in Chennai will also remain closed Wednesday.
Rail traffic on the Pamban bridge over the sea near Rameswaram has been suspended since morning due to the strong winds.
According to the weather bulletin issued by the meteorological office, squally winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph are likely along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during the next 24 hours.
Chennai has also experienced intermittent rains since Tuesday morning.
Cyclone Ward weakens, to cross Tamil Nadu coast

Cyclone Ward has weakened into a deep depression and is likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coast Tuesday evening accompanied by rainfall, the weather office here said
The cyclone is likely to weaken further into a low pressure area.
S.R. Ramanan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, told IANS: “Cyclone Ward has weakened into a deep depression. When the wind speed is less than 63 kmph it is called a depression and anything above it is called cyclone.”
He said the deep depression is centred about 150 km off Pamban and 300 km east of Kanyakumari.
It is likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coast Tuesday evening between Kanyakumari and Pamban, he said.
Squally winds reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph are likely along and off Tamil Nadu coast till Wednesday.
According to Ramanan, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rains is likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Thursday.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
Deep depression to bring more rains to Tamil Nadu

The depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards and intensified into a deep depression.
A special bulletin from the weather office here said the deep depression lay centred at about 350 km east-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 650 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 800 km southeast of Chennai.
The system is likely to intensify further and move in a west-northwesterly direction and likely to cross Sri Lanka coast by tomorrow evening, it said.
Under its influence, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely to commence over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from tomorrow morning, the report said.
Subsequently, increase in rainfall activities with scattered heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls is likely over south coastal Tamil Nadu from December 13 morning onwards, it said.
The weather office warned squally winds speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph are likely to commence along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts from tomorrow morning.
Sea condition would be very rough to high along and off these coasts, it said and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off these coasts.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at many places in the state
With the trough of low pressure over south west bay and adjoining west central bay off Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coast still persisting, heavy rain is likely to occur at many places in the state in the next 24 hours starting 0830 hrs Friday, weather officials here said.
Rain is likely to occur at many places over Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry, officials said.
Vallam in Thanjavur district recorded maximum rainfall of 11 cm during the last 24 hours ending 0830 hrs while Chennai alone recorded 6 cm of rainfall during the same period.
In Chennai the weather would be generally cloudy with one or two spells of shower or thundershower and the minimum temperature will be around 23 degree Celsius, the officials said.
The state has been experiencing intermittent rains over the past two days.

The week-long torrential rain has inundated paddy crop in an estimated area of 13,927 hectares in Nagapattinam district, with Sirkazhi, Kollidam and Sembanarkovil being the worst affected.
About 1,350 cusecs of water was flowing through the Melayur Check Dam. If the rain continued like this for two more days, the crops would be lost, farmers fear.
Collector C.Munianathan inspected the drainage of water at the Kaliappanallur Manjalaru channel and inundated fields at Aakorru-Mukootu, Pandaravaadai, Thalachangadu, Melayur, Sirkazhi, Perundhottam, Sithai, Neythal Vaasal, Keezhayur and Thiruvenkaadu.
At Tharangambadi, he visited the point of confluence of Nandalaru and Kannapan Moolai Channel to inspect the draining of flood water.
Further, to contain the situation, the Public Works Department has stocked 2.33 lakh sand bags and 1,700 casuarina logs. Efforts are under way to drain water that has logged in low-lying areas. A 24-hour control room for flood-related information is operational at the Collectorate on the phone number 1077.
About 124 km of roads belonging to the Public Works Department and 52 minor bridges were damaged in the torrential rain. It has damaged 14 houses too. Two persons reportedly injured in wall collapses were provided with an assistance of Rs.2,500. Further, 23 cattle were reportedly killed. The Collector has directed the payment of compensation.
Meanwhile, several parts of Nagapattinam district continued to receive intermittent rain on Sunday. The major amount of rainfall recorded in various parts of the district till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday were as follows: Tharangambadi 110.50 mm, Mayiladuthurai 160.60 mm, Thalainayar 123.40 mm, Thiruthiraipoondi 171 mm, Sirkazhi 236 mm, Nagapattinam 114.80 mm, Vedaranyam 55.60 mm, Kollidam 181 mm, Manalmedu 117.80 mm. The district recorded an average rainfall of 141.19 mm.
Tamil Nadu: heavy rains predicted, death toll reaches 12

The death toll in the heavy rains caused by north east monsoon, which is active over Tamil Nadu, rose to 12 with weathermen predicting heavy rains during the next two days.
In Villupuram district alone three persons died while one person each died in Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, Perambalur, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and Kaniyakumari districts, official sources said here on Friday.
Most of the deaths, from October 27 till date, were due to wall and roof collapses, police said adding many houses were also damaged in several parts of the state.
Met officials on Friday said since north east monsoon has been vigorous over coastal Tamil Nadu and active over interior parts of the state, heavy rain is likely to occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours beginning 8.30 am on Friday.
Chennai city alone recorded 4.3 cm of rain till 8.30 am on Friday during the last 24 hours.
Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea as strong onshore winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely along off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.
Several parts of the city reeled due to heavy showers on Friday as many roads were waterlogged and rush-hour traffic was thrown out of gear.
Metro officials said reservoirs in the city also received considerable inflow following heavy rains in the catchment areas.

Sharp spells of rains continued to lash different parts of the state following a trough along the Tamil Nadu Coast, with the regional weather office forecasting more rains for the next two days.
The weather office said isolated heavy rain was likely to occur over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and South Tamil Nadu besides Puducherry during the next two days.
According to weather observations at 8.30 am today, Rameswaram recorded a “heavy rainfall” of eight cm. followed by Mayiladuthurai and Tarangambadi (both Nagapattinam district) at 6 cm each.
Chennai and its suburban areas received good amount of rainfall, raising hopes among water managers of a good inflow to the three main reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city, located at Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Porur.
Sharp spells of rain on Wednesday, which continued late night in some parts of the city, left low-lying areas inundated.
Chennai Airport recorded one cm rain, the weather office said.
The city and its neighbourhood were likely to receive one or two spells of shower or thundershowers in some areas in the next two days, it added.
The weather office had last week announced that the North-East monsoon, which brings the bulk of rainfall to Tamil Nadu, had set in after an extended hot and humid season.
