Verification of family cards till November 19

The Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department has asked residents who have not been covered in the door-to-door inspection of family cards by November 15 to contact its officials.
The department officials have been asked to conduct a verification of family cards to weed out bogus cards. The verification of family cards in Ambattur, Royapuram, Tambaram, Mylapore and Thousand Lights began on October 20 and will be carried out till November 19.
Residents are requested to have their family cards, voters’ identity cards, cooking gas cards and EB cards ready for verification by officials concerned. Residents have been requested to inform the higher officials of the department if officials carry out verification without visiting their residences. The verification of family cards in Chidambaranar and Chepauk zones is being conducted from November 13 to 19.
“Voters rejected Jayalalithaa call” in Chennai

The heavy turnout of voters for by-elections to five Assembly constituencies on Tuesday shows that the electorate has rejected All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Jayalalithaa’s call to boycott the elections, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu said here on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters, Mr. Thangkabalu welcomed the State government’s warning to those openly supporting banned organisations. He said Congress workers would not remain patient if the VCK continued its attack on Sonia and the Central government.
Cumbum: women voters outnumber men
CUMBUM:
Total votes polled in the by election for Cumbum assembly constituency was 76.99 per cent, according to District Election Officials here on Wednesday.
The total votes polled were 1,12,153, 52,972 men and 59,181 women. (Total voters in the assembly constituency are 1,45,673 of which 71,619 are men and 74,054 women.)
Despite the absence of AIADMK, the arch rival of DMK, women voters’ turn out was more than men voters in the constituency this time. The difference between women and men votes was 6,209.
It was just 315 votes in 2006 Assembly polls in Cumbum.
Similarly, polling percentage in the by-election was six per cent more than the votes polled in 2006 assembly election.
A total of 1,07,016 voters, 95.42 per cent of total electorate, used electors’ photo identity card to exercise their franchise and only 5,137 voters, just 4.58 per cent of total voters, used other documents to cast their votes.
(The district administration had stated that the EPIC was issued to all voters in the constituency).
The District Election Office declared that 57 voters had opted for rule 49-O.
Presiding officers in most of the polling stations stated that not a single voter refused to cast his or her vote in their stations on Tuesday.
