Tamilnadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin today said that the power demands of the State would be fulfilled within two years. He said this after inspecting an NTPL power station being built here. The power plant project implemented by the National Thermal Power Lmited (NTPL) is coming up at a total cost of Rs 4909.54 crore.The Deputy Chief Minister, who is on a three-day visit to Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, will also inaugurate completed projects, lay foundation stone for new schemes and distribute assistance all worth about Rs 202.69 crore today, tomorrow and on Saturday.

After inaugurating the flyover constructed on an outlay of Rs 18 crore at Vannarpet intersection here tomorrow at 9 am, Stalin will lay foundation stone for an over-bridge to be constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore at the Kulavanigarpuram manned railway crossing at a function to be held at Ambasamudram around 10 am.
At the function to be held at Ambasamudram, Stalin will inaugurate 354 works, including Vickramasingapuram – Manimuthar Drinking Water Scheme and a 110 KV sub-station at Ambasamudram, executed on an outlay of Rs. 47.89 crore, lay foundation stone for 40 new projects to be implemented at a cost of Rs 55.50 crore and disburse assistance to the tune of Rs 19.98 crore to nearly 2,000 self-help groups.
In a function to be held at Kadayanallur in the evening, he will inaugurate 73 works including additional buildings at Tenkasi and Sengottai Government Hospitals and bio-fertiliser manufacturing unit at Tenkasi, implemented at a cost of Rs 39.22 crore, lay foundation stone for 66 works to be taken up on an outlay of Rs 20.66 crore and hand over assistance to the tune of Rs 90 lakh to 1,654 pregnant women under Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme.
On 7 August, the Deputy Chief Minister will inaugurate a ‘Samathuvapuram’ at North Ariyanayagipuram near Sankarankovil and open the Sankarankovil taluk office building along with 26 other buildings, all constructed at the cost of Rs 10.24 crore.
He will also lay foundation stone for ten works to be executed on an outlay of Rs 2.95 crore while 4,420 beneficiaries will receive assistance to the tune of Rs 5.34 crore.
In Tuticorin district, the local administration is geared up with all preparatory works ahead of the Deputy Chief Minister’s visit for the inauguration of several developmental schemes and projects. Periyar Ninaivu Samathuvapuram at Tharuvaikulam would also be inaugurated.
The Samathuvapuram was built incorporating all facilities including housing for as many as hundred beneficiaries, drinking water, over head tanks, black top roads and a children’s park at an expenditure of Rs. 232.55 lakh.
Besides, he would be laying the foundation stone for a total of 3,197 development works at an estimated cost of Rs 105.07 crore.
Another 1,196 completed development works to the tune of Rs. 53.79 crore would also be inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister.
Financial assistance to the tune of Rs 17.8 crore would be extended to as many as 14, 483 individual beneficiaries on the occasion by him. Stalin will give revolving funds to as many as 1,500 women self help groups.

Allegations and counter-allegations of ‘cash for votes’ have surfaced in several parts of the Tiruchendur constituency.
Major political parties have formed small groups of cadres drawn from various southern districts to “approach” voters “to win” their support. Members of these groups “meet” the allotted number of (usually 50) voters frequently to make sure their votes are cast in support of their candidates.
“Yes, I received Rs.3,000 from a stranger, who approached me a couple of days ago with an appeal to cast three votes in my family in favour of his party’s candidate. For me, it is big money and hence I accepted it,” admits a grocery shop owner at Auththoor.
There have been reports of ‘influential persons’ in villages approaching strangers with a list of voters and assuring them that arrangements could be made to “get” votes.
A free refectory near Auththoor bus-stand, proudly declaring itself ‘Election Special Non-Vegetarian Mess’ through a huge flex board at the main entrance of the hall, is feeding round-the-clock the cadre mobilised from various parts of the southern districts.
“As all the parties have pumped in hundreds of workers into the Tiruchendur Assembly constituency; you can’t get food from any hotel so easily. Devotees visiting Lord Subramaniaswamy Temple these days struggle a lot as every hotel here has been fully occupied by the cadre and office-bearers of political parties,” said K. Subramanian, a devotee from Thiruvarur district.
The overturning of a mini-lorry loaded with several bundles of saris and dhotis on the outskirts of Tuticorin on Sunday evening has lent credence to the general allegation that freebies are being pumped into Tiruchendur constituency. Within a few minutes of the incident, the ill-fated lorry and the ‘consignment’ were recovered by some people while three persons who travelled in the lorry were rushed to hospital with injuries. Since the lorry was proceeding from Tuticorin to Udankudi near Tiruchendur, it is believed that the saris and dhotis were meant for distribution to voters.

The DMK Government fulfilled all poll promises, M.K. Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP, said here on Thursday.
Campaigning at Authoor in favour of DMK candidate Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, she made it clear that only in Tamil Nadu a kg of rice was being sold at Re.1 with the aim of eradicating poverty.
It had created a revolutionary change in the realm of politics. Taking pride in the efforts of Chief Minister, she said Mr. Karunanidhi had been shouldering responsibilities and working persistently to bring more and more development schemes. The status of the weaker section had gone up.
Hitting out the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalitha, she flayed her double standards in contesting the bypoll.
The AIADMK had boycotted the previous bypolls in all five assembly constituencies. The electors should bear that in mind and teach a lesson to the AIADMK.
AIADMK cadres had lost self-respect and there was no recognition for them in their party.

Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar today inaugurated the Zinconium complex at Pazhyakayal in Tuticorin district for producing Zinconium Oxide and sponge used for manufacturing zinconium alloy components required for nuclear power reactors.
A unit of the Nuclear Fuel Complex, the complex was set up in a 1,240 acre area, acquired by the Department of Atomic Energy(DAE).
The project has the capacity to produce 500 TPY of Zinconium, Oxide. But as an intermediate, it would produce 250 TPY Reactor Grade Zinconium sponge.
The plants established at the Zinconium complex have state of the art material handling and automation systems to carry out various intricate processes like petroleum coke briquetting, magnesio-thermio Reduction and Pyro-vaccum distillation.
Provisions were also made under the project to construct a township for accommodating employees of the Zinconium complex and the staff of Central Industrial Security Force(CISF), in charge of the security.
Apart from meeting the domestic needs, Zinconium Oxide and Sponge produced from the complex has tremendous potential for export to advanced countries involved in nuclear power generation.
Newly appointed AEC Chairman and BARC Director Dr Srikumar Banerjee, who would be succeeding Dr Anil Kakodkar, and other officials were present on the occasion.

The emergency service of 108, which has been launched in Tuticorin on September 14, is playing a crucial role to cater to the needs of the patients at distress.
It is so, thanks to the novel public-private partnership initiative taken by the Tamil Nadu Health System Project in association with Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI) for helping the needy to save their lives.
It has been offering timely help to the needy at times of risk. Five 108- vehicles in various stations of the district, including Tuticorin, Tiruchendur, Sathankulam, Vilathikulam and Kovilpatti have been kept ready at respective police stations to render services based on emergency.
“We have been dealing with all emergency cases related to medical, police, fire and others since the launch of service. The needy should have to call on numbers “108”and our personnel are on the alert round-the-clock to help patients anywhere in the district,” R.J. Shriraman, Operation Executive, 108 Services, Tuticorin, told The Hindu here on Monday.
“During September, as many as 121 cases of patients under various complications have been referred to hospitals. As of October, a total of 497 cases, including 181 road accidents, 78 labour cases, 55 medical cases, seven first aid, six assault cases, five burns (fire accidents), two animal bite cases, three poison-oriented cases and 39 other cases have been recorded.” Five more 108 service vehicles would come up within December.
Tuticorin girl wins gold medal in Annual Athletic Championship, 2009
A. Sornamalathi, an eleventh standard student of Business Mathematics of Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin, won gold medal in under-16 high jump at the Annual Athletic Championship, 2009, held at Albert F. Peiris Stadium, Wennappuwa, Sri Lanka on November 26 and 27.
Besides, the girl had won the 400 m relay and 4 x 400 m relay events and secured second place in hurdles, third in 200 meter dash in the same competition.
She told The Hindu that she would like to represent India at Olympic games. The girl also took part in sporting events at national level in Jamshedpur, Chandigarh, Vijayawada, Cochin and came out with flying colours over the past three years.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited (TMB) celebrated its 89th Founders Day here on Wednesday.
Collector G. Prakash, Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar and Member of Parliament S. S. Rama Subbu (Tirunelveli Constituency) commended the services being rendered by the bank.
G. Nagamal Reddy, Managing Director and CEO of TMB, who presided over the programme, thanked the customers for extending their support.
He also expressed gratitude to the founders, share holders, directors and regulators along with the dedicated workforce for having made significant contributions to a greater development.
Bank’s customers, who had received State and Central Government awards in recognition of business performance, were also honoured on the occasion.

The Indian Coast Guard Thursday announced the setting up of a mini air station in the port city of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu and assured sufficient protection for fishermen from Sri Lankan navy attacks
Speaking to reporters after calling on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here, Commander Coast Guard (Region East) A. Rajasekhar said: “The mini air station will set up on 50 acres of land in Tuticorin.”
Another such mini station is being set up in Ulundurpet around 150 km from here.
Queried about the attacks by the Sri Lankan navy on Indian fishermen, he said the chief minister too expressed concern over the matter and wanted the Coast Guard to protect the fishermen.
Assistance distributed in Tuticorin

Collector G. Prakash extended educational and marriage assistances to the parents of six beneficiaries here belonging to Fishermen Welfare Board here on Monday at the Collectorate here.
A sum of Rs. 23, 000 was provided to the beneficiaries in the form of cheques. The welfare board for the fishermen was formed on June 29, 2007 by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the large interest of the fishing community for social security, said Mr. Prakash.
So far 30, 000 fishermen had been applied for the enrollment in the welfare board, and 17, 000 fishermen had already enrolled in the board, he added.
The process of issuing the identity cards was being made for the enrolled fishermen in a phased manner and the people with fishing and allied activities between the age group of 18 and 65 could register themselves as members, he said.
Government officials were honoured with the letter of appreciation from the Governor and medals – K. Thangavelu, Regional Transport Officer for collection of Rs. 1.65 lakh and S. Paneervelu, Project Officer, Integrated Child Development Scheme with Rs. 58, 080 towards the contribution of Armed Forces Flag Day fund for 2006.
Finally, Mr. Prakash presented a certificate of appreciation to A. Shankar, Executive Director, Empower, the Centre for Consumer Education, Research and Advocacy, for his role of the best coordinator of the consumer club in 2008 – 09.
