New system of power bills for consumers will be extended to the entire

The new system of assessment and collection of power bills for low-tension (LT) consumers will be extended to the entire city and parts of Kancheepuram district from June 1.
Tamil Nadu Electricity Board
At present, the system covers Chennai’s five divisions — Anna Salai, Anna Nagar, Mylapore, K.K. Nagar and Perambur. On extension, it will cover the rest of the city and the Chengalpattu area.

Under the new system, the assessment and collection of bills would be carried out throughout the month, though there is no change in the bi-monthly billing cycle for the consumers.

The time-frame for payment of the bills has been increased to 20 days from 15 days.

A senior official of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) said that orders had been passed for implementing the system.

Steps were being taken to identify the route map of the particular area for undertaking individual assessment and redeploying assessors in areas where there was shortage.

The system was launched on a trial basis on March 1, 2009 in the Anna Salai Division, and was later extended to four more divisions in February 2010.

On the advantages of the new system, the official said that there was optimum utilisation of manpower, reduction of crowds at the payment counters and regular cash flow for the board.

Previously, meter reading was recorded in the second fortnight of the month with payment dates fixed from the 1st to the 15th of the subsequent month.

Similarly, the TNEB has been taking steps to ease payment of electricity bills online through banks.

The official said that online payment could now be made through five banks, including Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Indian Bank, City Union Bank and Indian Overseas Bank. Around 30,000 people pay the bills through online mode every month.

Also, the Board has an arrangement of paying electricity bills in post offices. This is being tried out on a trial basis in two post offices in Anna Road Head Post Office and Anna Nagar Post Office. Since Wednesday, 50 more post offices in the city have started accepting payment of electricity bills,

J Jayalalithaa on slams DMK govt for the dismal power situation

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Sunday came down heavily on the DMK government for the dismal power situation in the State and alleged large-scale corruption in the import of coal from Indonesia by TNEB.
J Jayalalithaa
Leading a demonstration at Neyveli, she promised a power-cut free Tamil Nadu if returned to power in 2011. It would be her priority to tide over power shortage within months of coming back to power and ensure uninterrupted supply round the clock to all sections of society, she said

She alleged that during the DMK regime, power generation capacity of Tamil Nadu had come down to 7,300 MW. “The State, which was enjoying surplus power in the beginning of 2006, had now become a power deficit State,” she said. Earlier in the day, she unveiled a statue of party founder M G Ramachandiran in Neyveli.

TNEB was not importing the coal directly:CM

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa has been making charges against the DMK government to divert attention from her party’s defeat in the recently concluded Pennagaram byelection.
Karunanidhi.Jayalalitha
Refuting the allegations made by the former Chief Minister on the import of coal by the Tamilnadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Karunanidhi said in a statement here that the TNEB was not importing the coal directly, but was routing it through the Metal and Minerals Trading Corporation, a Central government agency.

‘When the total amount of coal imported by the TNEB in 2009-2010 was only worth Rs 1,000 crore, Jayalalithaa has said that the TNEB had faced Rs 1,000 crore due to the import. It is possible only for her to come out with such statements,’ the Chief Minister said.

Refuting another charge, Karunanidhi said, ‘the coal was bought at only USD 90 to 95, and not at USD 120 per tonne as alleged by Jayalalithaa. Similarly, the calorific value of coal was prescribed by the Centre and not by the State.’
He added: ‘Jayalalithaa has said in her statement that her allegations were based on some reliable information. It seems someone had fooled her as yesterday was 1 April.’

The Chief Minister also denied any connection between the TNEB and a private company. He also said the tenders for the newly built Secretariat complex were given only after an international bid.

On Friday, Jayalalithaa alleged money laundering in the TNEB in the import of low calorific value coal from Indonesia at high cost.

In a statement, Jayalalithaa, quoting information from sources, alleged that more than six million tonnes of coal of low calorific value was being imported by the TNEB every year from Indonesia at a cost of 120 USD per tonne.

Stating the cost of coal from South Africa was even lower, she alleged by purchasing low calorific coal at 35 USD more than the cost of high calorific coal, the TNEB, which was already running at a loss, was being subjected to further loss.

Pension to artistes

Meanwhile, an official release here today said the Chief Minister has issued an order to include 500 more artistes in the pension scheme being implemented by the government.

They would get Rs 1,000 per month, the release said and added that a total number of 7,391 persons are benefiting thanks to the scheme.
