Normal life was badly hit in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry following heavy rains as Met officials predict more downpour in the next 24 hours in the region.
“A low pressure area still persists over west central and adjoining South West bay off south Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coast. Under its influence, heavy rain is expected over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours, starting 8.30 AM today,” a Met official said.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea as strong northwesterly winds, with speed between 45-55 kmph are likely to blow along off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
South Tamil Nadu coast was also likely to experience strong winds from westerly direction with speed occasionally touching 45-55 kmph, the officials said.
Meanwhile, normal life was hit in Chennai and its suburbs following incessant rains and strong winds since yesterday.
Several areas were under knee-deep water while low-lying areas in north Chennai were inundated as the city recorded 200 mm of rain in last 24 hours ending eight am today.
Kanchipuram and Niligiris districts registered the maximum amount of rainfall at 500 mm.
Karnataka pledges to release more Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu
Posted by ganesh in Agriculture, Departments, Health, Information, Rain, Water, meeting, tamilnadu on August 25th, 2010

Buoyed by the promise of better rainfall in the coming days, Karnataka on Tuesday assured the Centre that it would release more water from the Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu to make up for the lowering water table.
The decision was taken at a meeting held by water resources secretary U N Punjiar on Tuesday with senior officials from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
“Karnataka has assured us that they will release as much water as they can,” Punjiar said.
However, Karnataka has not disclosed about the volume of water it will release and the timeframe for it.
Official sources said that with better rains in the offing, Karnataka said it would be in a position to release more water. Karnataka has already released 29 TMC while the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal had awarded 90 TMC to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Sources said even last year while Karnataka released less water initially, by the end of the year, it had released more than the share expected from it.
Over the years, the sharing of the Cauvery waters has led to a serious conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Karnataka feels that it has not got its due share of water utilisation vis-a- vis Tamil Nadu while the latter pleads that it has already developed almost 3,000,000 acres of land, and as a result has come to depend very heavily on the existing pattern of usage. Any change in this pattern, it claims, will adversely affect the livelihood of millions of farmers in the state.
Meanwhile, AIADMK leader Jayalalitha last week stepped up the heat on the ruling DMK, terming it as “anti-farmer” and blaming for a reduction in agricultural production in Tamil Nadu.

Urge the Union Government to expeditiously complete the Sethusamudhram Project

The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday urged the Centre to expeditiously execute the Sethusamudram project by removing “hurdles” that have come in the way of its execution.

“We urge the Union Government to expeditiously complete the Sethusamudhram Project, which will provide an impetus to the economy of Tamil Nadu and has enormous potential to add to the prosperity of the state, by removing hurdles that have come in the way it its execution”, Finance minister K Anbazhagan said in his budget speech.
On the Mullaperiyar issue, he said the state government was of the view that the Supreme Court order, constituting the empowered committee, required to be recalled.
“Hence, an interlocutory petition was been filed in Supreme Court on March 8 praying for recall of its order dated February 18 and that the court may pass appropriate orders to continue its hearing in this case”, it said.
The Supreme Court in its judgement on February 27, 2006, had held that the Mullaiperiyar Dam is safe to raise the water level from 136 feet to 142 feet.
With a view to prevent implementation of this judgement, the Kerala Government resorted to a legislative amendment.
After hearing a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government to declare this legislative amendment unconstitutional, the Constitutional Bench of Supreme Court on March 18 ordered constitution of an Empowered Committee under the Chairmanship of A.S. Anand, former Chief Justice of India.
