Tamil Nadu government today refuted Karnataka’s allegation of “deviating” from the original plan on the Hogenakkal water project, saying it stuck to the plan and there was no truth in the charge of the state drawing excess water than the permitted level.

“There is no plan to draw 1.7 tmc or 2.5 tmc of water as alleged by Karnataka Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai. nstead we are sticking to the Centre-sanctioned original plan of drawing 1.4 tmc only,” Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin informed the State Assembly.
Responding to KP Anbazhagan (AIADMK), who raised the issue, Mr. Stalin, who also holds the Municipal Administration and Water Supply portfolio, denied violation of any sorts, including the location of the project.
Promising to complete the project, which envisages providing drinking water supply to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, well ahead of the schedule of 2012, Stalin said he will give further explanation on the contentious issue while replying to the debate on grants, scheduled for Monday.
Karnataka, at loggerheads with Tamil Nadu on the vexed Cauvery water sharing dispute, had alleged deviation by Tamil Nadu from the original plan regarding the Rs 1334 crore Japanese-funded project. Bommai had said his state was mulling legal action against its neighbour.

J. Jayalalithaa has urged the government to consider the opposition parties

Describing the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government’s actions on river water disputes as detrimental to the state’s interests, AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa has urged the government to consider the opposition parties’ views.
Referring to the government’s decision Wednesday to nominate retired Supreme Court Justice A.R. Lakshmanan to the apex court-constituted five-member committee on the safety of Mullaperiyar dam, Jayalalithaa said Thursday the delay in doing so has benefited Kerala.
Jayalalithaa said the initial rejection of the five-member committee by the government and the belated nomination of a member to the panel has further delayed the case involving Kerala. “The government should consult the opposition parties on important issues affecting the state,” she said.
With the Supreme Court rejecting the government’s “recall petition” – a plea to recall the court’s decision to constitute a five-member committee, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Wednesday announced the government’s decision to nominate a member.
Earlier, when the DMK party’s general council passed a resolution to boycott the committee and the government did not nominate a member, Jayalalithaa had warned that the decision may prove costly for the state.
On Thursday, she recalled her warning that in a case filed by the Tamil Nadu government the absence of a state’s representative in the committee would strengthen Kerala’s position.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been at loggerheads over the Mullaperiyar dam built under an agreement signed in 1886 between the then Maharaja of Travancore and the British administration.
While the dam is located in Kerala’s Idukki district, it serves Tamil Nadu. Both the states were carved on linguistic basis in 1956 during reorganisation of states after Independence.
In recent years, Tamil Nadu has demanded that the storage capacity of the dam be increased by raising its height from 136 feet (41.5 metre) to 142 feet (43 metre) to meet the increasing water demand for irrigation.
In 2006, the Supreme Court gave its order in favour of Tamil Nadu to raise the storage levels in February 2006, the Kerala government passed a law effectively nullifying the judgment in March that year.
Opposing the Kerala law, Tamil Nadu filed a case in the Supreme Court in 2006, which the court, after hearing for nearly three years, referred to a five-member constitution bench.
The bench decided to form a five-member committee headed by former Chief Justice of India A.S. Anand. The court asked both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to nominate one technical expert each to the panel, while the central government was told to nominate two technical experts.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages committed 1 million dollars revival of Nemam Lake

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages today committed more than one million dollars for the revival of the 1000 acre Nemam Lake in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.
The company would partner with Tamil Nadu government and an NGO, Siruthuli for reviving the lake in a phased manner.
In the first phase, 100 acres of lake would be restored in the next three months with an outlay of 195,000 dollar to be jointly funded by Hindustan Coca-Cola and the state Government.
Revival of the lake in the first phase will create a water recharge capacity in excess of 150,000 kilo litres project to be executed by award winning NGO ‘Siruthuli’, which had restored Noyyal river in Coimbatore.
The lake revival project was launched today with the traditional ground breaking ceremony.
The restoration of the lake would immensely benefit the villagers, solely dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said the project would ensure better water availability for domestic and irrigation purposes in the area and would be the right model to demonstrate the virtues of public-private-people partnerships for water conservation and livelihood projects.
TN government would follow the guidelines of Madras High Court
Posted by ganesh in Assembly, Chennai, Court, Departments, Information, Other on April 5th, 2010
Tamil Nadu government would follow the guidelines of Madras High Court in setting up new court buildings in the state and frequent agitations by lawyers for court complexes were unfair, law minister Durai Murugan said in the state Assembly.

“Tamil Nadu government cannot directly construct any new court premises. It would only follow instructions and guidelines of the high court to establish a court”, law minister Durai Murugan said.
Referring to frequent agitations by lawyers requesting to construct new court buildings in their respective region, he said it was unfair to go in for such agitations since the state government could not decide itself on setting up new court buildings wherever it is required. It could only follow the high court guidelines and set up court complexes according to the financial position.
“Like never before, this government has accorded sanction for construction of court buildings and quarters for the presiding officers at an estimated cost of more than Rs200 crore so far drawing praise from the judges of the Supreme Court as well as the justices of the high courts of other states”, he said. A sum of about Rs500 crore has been allocated for administration of justice this year,
