Proposed elevated St Thomas Mount Metro Rail station

The proposed elevated St Thomas Mount Metro Rail station, which is to come up on a 10-acre site, would be designed as a ‘signature station’ and would integrate five modes of public transport – suburban railway, Southern Railway, Metro Rail, MRTS and public buses – at various levels.

It will accommodate 18,000 to 20,000 foot falls per hour and have 1,200 equivalent car space for parking, said V.Vishwanath, Principal Architect Vishwannath Associates, who were commissioned last year by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the prime consultants to Chennai Metro Rail, to design both the St.Thomas Mount and the Chennai airport stations.

This transit station would be one of the few to have an exclusive commercial space spread over two floors integrated within it.

“The property development at the St.Thomas Mount station would pay back the entire construction cost within six years,” he added.

The Chennai airport station, designed like an entry gate to the airport, will connect with the subway at the Tirusulam suburban station at the basement and with the proposed travelator at the new airport terminal at an elevated level.

The tendering process was on for construction of other elevated stations.

The locations of St.Thomas Mount and airport stations were still under discussion. The construction of two Metro Rail corridors running to a total length of 45 km was inaugurated in June 2009.

The project is expected to be completed in 2015.

SR will ensure installation of more wind mills at railway stations in Madurai and Tirunelveli

The Southern Railway (SR) will ensure installation of more wind mills at railway stations in Madurai and Tirunelveli districts, if the wind energy system proved success, according to SR General Manager Deepak Kishan.
windmill
Inaugurating a wind mill at Aduthurai railway station near here yesterday, set up by the Coimbatore-based Viviann Wind generators, Mr Kishan said, ”Wind energy is god gift and we have to utilise it.” Stating that the wind powered unreserved ticketing system has been introduced in Aduthurai railway station, he said power generated from the wind mill would run the UPS, provide skeletal lighting at the station and help signal operations.

Speaking on the occassion, B K Shivakumar, Chairman of Vivian Electric, said a wind energy generator of 2 KW capacity has been erected atop a 20-metre tall tower.

The wind data of Aduthurai was encouraging. If the wind speed was above 3m/sec, it starts generating AC voltage with a variable frequency which is rectified to DC voltage and then inverted to 230 V single phase 50 Hz, he said.

Managing Director of the Company Vimal Arockyaraj Vincent said the company has provided hybrid street light to rain drop boat house at Mudaliarkuppam, off East Coast Road, near Chennai.

Railway officials said it has been proposed to provide One KW capacity solar power supply system at TPTN station in Tiruchirapalli to supply power to the lighting circuits of station building.

They also said a solar system has been provided for operation of ticket checking system at Thirunageswaram railway station.

The officials said many of the railway stations in Tiruchirapalli division falling under the rural distribution network of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board(TNEB) were facing power cuts and to overcome this one 500 VA capacity solar system-based inverter has been provided to cater power requirement of UPS during power shut down.
