Different strokes by judge, ex-VC on Tamil

An innocuous book release function turned into a forum for an interesting debate on whether Tamil or English should be the medium of instruction in schools, with a high court judge backing the mother tongue and a former vice-chancellor of the Tamil University rooting for English.

While presiding over the function where two English books titled Tirukkural Ethics for Humanity and Tirukkural Tenets for Right Living were released, Justice D Hari Paranthaman of the Madras High Court raised concerns over the lack of interest among Tamils in learning their mother tongue. He said students in the State could pass out from schools without learning Tamil. “Tamil is rejected in Tamil Nadu as a medium of instruction,” he said.

Of late, he said, the essence of the Tamil language was being diluted with the inclusion of more number of English words in it, apart from Sanskrit, and called on scholars to take steps to cleanse Tamil of its impurities. “The past generation was thinking in Tamil and wrote in English. But the present generation thinks and writes only in English,” he rued.

However, Avvai Natarajan, former vice-chancellor of the Tamil University, took everyone by surprise by extending his support for English. He argued that English was a link language between people from various regions in the country. Natarajan is also the vice-chairperson of a five-member seminar organising committee set up for the World Classical Tamil Conference.

Later, Erode Tamilanban, a renowned Tamil poet, echoed Natarajan.

He is part of the reception committee for the World Tamil meet.

Irrigation water to be released in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI:

Water for irrigation in the Uyyakondan river would be released from Monday onwards following the erection of some crucial piers for an aqueduct being constructed at the Puthur weir in the city.

Water release has been suspended in the river for the past three months to facilitate execution of this vital component and the construction of retaining walls along the river under the Rs.253-crore flood control project. The river has a total ayacut of about 36,000 acres and farmers dependent on it were expected to go in for samba cultivation.

According to Public Works Department officials, eight crucial piers for the aqueduct have been built. “The piers at the entry and exit points of the aqueduct have been erected paving the way for the release of water. Work on the other piers could go on as they were outside the river,” said K. K. Palanisamy, Executive Engineer, PWD, River Conservation Division.

Mr. Palanisamy and other officials briefed Collector T. Soundiah, who inspected the progress of the flood control project works in various parts of the district on Friday.

The aqueduct would carry the flow in the Uyyakondan River by-passing the Puthur Weir and thereby help control the flow of the flood discharges from the Koraiyar into the Kudamuritti river. It would do away with the need to put up temporary ‘turfing’ at the Puthur weir every year to regulate the flow in the Uyyakondan river.

The confluence of the Koraiyur and Uyyakondan, from where the Kudamuritti river originates, often witnesses a huge surge of floods during the monsoon. The Kudamuritti has carried over 25,000 cusecs of water during floods in recent years against its capacity of less than 8,000 cusecs inundating low-lying residential colonies. The aqueduct was expected to help avert this problem as it would prevent water heading up at the Puthur weir. The structure would run for a distance of about 360 metres over 36 piers. The duct, with a capacity to carry about 600 cusecs of water, would be built of box culverts above which inspection vehicles could run. The aqueduct and other improvement works at the weir were taken up at a cost of Rs.7.80 crore. An underground tunnel has been built across the Uyyakondan river to let out the flood discharge from Kollankulam channel and residential areas Edamalaipattipudur, Karumandapam and New Selva Nagar areas directly into Kudamuritti river. Retaining walls were also built along the Uyyakondan river in the city stretch.

The PWD has planned to complete the aqueduct and other improvement works on the Uyyakondan river by the next closure period in the summer of 2010.

Work on widening of the Kudamuritti river is expected to commence soon. The land required for widening the river has been identified. The land value has been fixed and sent to the government for approval, Mr. Soundiah said.
