Registered against Sitting DMK MLA and his wife for offences under the PCA
Sitting DMK MLA B Ranganathan and his wife Nalini were on Wednesday discharged from the Rs 1 crore disproportionate assets case.
According to the prosecution — Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) — a case was registered against Ranganathan and his wife for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) in 2002. The charge against them was that they had accumulated wealth to the tune of Rs 1 crore during the check-period between 1992 and 2002.
During the pendency of the case, the duo filed petitions seeking discharge from the case. Their counsel A V Somasundaram contended that his clients had sufficient income through legal means before and during the check-period through various sources, including business and agricultural activities.
They had filed their returns then and there giving details of their income.
The DVAC had suppressed the facts and inflated the value of the property so as to attract the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act , he argued.
Accepting the arguments of Somasundaram, IV Additional Sessions Judge R Paranjothi discharged the duo from the case before framing of charges.

Over 1,100 persons have registered for health insurance scheme, says Minister in Cuddalore
CUDDALORE:
Under the Kalaignar insurance scheme for life-saving treatments, so far 1,181 people have been registered across the State and of them 836 have undergone operations at a total expenditure of Rs.3.75 crore, said Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam.
The Minister was speaking at a special camp organised on Sunday at Vadalur near here for enrolment of the beneficiaries under the scheme and inauguration of the photo-session for issuing identity cards to them.
He noted that 401 hospitals had been identified in the State for providing the treatment to the 51 identified diseases. For bringing out the benefit of the health insurance scheme, the government would be paying an annual premium of Rs.517 for each family, the Minister said.
However, Mr. Panneerselvam said, certain persons, as was their forte, had a sceptical look at the scheme without realising its real import. He was making a veiled reference to the criticism by S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, that the amount earmarked for the scheme could be utilised for improving the facilities in government hospitals to provide sustained health care.
The prospective beneficiaries were being given identity cards and their fingerprints were taken. The members of the 26 welfare boards could get the ID cards without any further verification.
In the case of those who were outside the purview of the welfare boards but whose annual income was below Rs.72,000, the membership would be offered after getting the endorsement from the respective Village Administrative Officers.
The Minister pointed out that thanks to the quality health care services provided in the 1,533 Primary Health Centres, 29 district headquarters government hospitals and 15 medical college hospitals, the life expectancy had gone up from 56 to 66 years. With the conscious attempt made to further improve the services, the longevity might go up to 70 years. So far, 11,000 camps were organised under the Varumum Kappom Thittam and 2,000 children were enrolled under the ‘Small children heart surgery scheme.’
Collector P. Seetharaman said a total of 19,45,815 members would be enrolled under the health insurance scheme in Cuddalore district. It would enable each family to get treatment to the value of Rs.1 lakh over a four-year period. The Collector further said that the present people-friendly government was making all-out efforts to fulfil the needs of the citizens. Later, the Minister gave away 245 free gas stoves to the beneficiaries at Poosalikuppam.
