Though there are symptoms for gruelling summer in southern districts this year, the lusciously succulent watermelons have hit the markets in large numbers here as one of the ways to keep cool in the summer.

For customers, the sweet information for tasting the juicy flesh of sweet melon is that there is no change of price of melon when compared to the last year. Heaps of watermelons have been seen in different parts of important roads of Ramanathapuram.
The roadside hawkers, who often change the business depending upon seasonal fruits and vegetables, keep themselves busy in cutting, slicing and selling the colourful fruit. A few of them work overtime to get melons from the suppliers, besides selling them to the customers during daytime. Different sizes of melons weighing from 3 to 15 kg are available in the market, particularly roadsides.
“The sun is shining bright than last summer, during which the town and peripherals received good summer shower. I hope we will have a good business this season,” says C. Murugan, a wholesale and retail melon merchant in Ramanathapuram.

According to a rough estimate, around 400 to 500 kg of watermelon arrives daily to the town alone. While some traders get melons from the Madurai market, some have contact with the traders in Poovanthi near Madurai, who buy melons from the farmers in the nearby localities in Madurai and Sivaganga districts.
The average retail price for a kg of melon is Rs.10. A piece of melon is being sold at Rs.5. Some traders, particularly fresh juice stalls, offer a glass of melon drink at a cost of Rs.15.

Collector T.N. Hariharan opening the shutter at Parthibanur

The Vaigai water, which has been opened for irrigation, has reached Parthibanur regulator, which has facility to regulate water for various parts of the Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts.
Collector T.N. Hariharan opened the shutter at Parthibanur near here on Monday to mark the supply of water through three channels such as Vaigai River, Right Main Canal (RMC) and Left Main Canal (LMC) in the presence of Public Work Department (PWD) officials and a few farmers.
The Vaigai water, which was opened on Friday, is expected to reach Ramanathapuram big tank within a day, as the water ways are fully wet due to the recent rain.
Mr. Hariharan said the district would fully get its share of 4,350 mcft out of the present storage of 7,000 mcft in the Vaigai dam. The outflow (from Vaigai dam) would be 3,000 cusecs for the first two days and 2,800 cusecs in the next two days. It would be 1,500 cusecs for 4 days from December 1 to 4. The outflow from the Vaigai dam would be 1,400 cusecs for a day on December 5. The pattern of arrival of Vaigai water would enable a proper distribution of water to all areas.
T. Kumanan, Executive Engineer, PWD (WRO), said 3,000 cusecs was being realised at Parthibanur, as there was no water pilferage, evaporation or other, as the waterways had already been recharged.
It would benefit 67,937 acres in Ramanathpauram and Sivaganga districts.
Mr. Hariharan said 154 kanmois would get water from Right Main Canal and 48 kanmois would receive water from Left Main Canal of which 39 were in Sivaganga district.
Necessary steps were taken to take the water to the stipulated areas. Police protection would be given at vulnerable areas to prevent illegal tapping of water.
Gnanakannan, Revenue Divisional Officer, M. Salim Babu, Ramamoorthy, Assistant Executive Engineers, T. Guruthivel Maran, G. Nagarathinam, Jeyaraj, Assistant Engineers and others took part.

Unprecedented rise in prices of vegetables consumption at least for the time being
Posted by ganesh in Public, businesses, ramanathapuram on November 24th, 2009
Prices of vegetables have gone up to an unprecedented level in the open market hereforcing the poor to limit their vegetable consumption at least for the time being.
A kg of butter beans and soya beans are being sold at Rs.80 and Rs.60 respectively at the Velipattinam market, where wholesale shops are functioning for small time traders of Rameswaram, Kilakarai and other semi urban towns.
Prices of beans (common) and avarai are sold at Rs.48 and Rs.58 respectively per kg by the retail traders as against the average price of Rs.24 to Rs.30. The price of the commodities (beans and avarai) for local traders is Rs.44 and Rs.54 respectively.
Brinjal is being sold at Rs.40 to Rs.48 per kg depending upon the quality.
The price of tomato, which has a huge demand, rules between Rs.34 and Rs.40. Prices of vegetables in remote areas are being sold from Rs.6 to Rs.10 from the base price at Ramanathapuram, as the traders include their profit margin and transportation cost.
Cabbage is the only commodity priced low in the market. Consumers pay Rs.24 for a kg of cabbage, the price of which also is on higher side than the usual rate.
Traders say that though this is the season (October and November) in which prices of vegetables, particularly tomato, rule high usually, no one has expected that it will rise to this level.
They cited the late arrival of northeast monsoon was the main reason for low production in different parts of the State and Andhra Pradesh thereby restricting the arrival to the main markets and end users.
Ramanathapuram roads in a bad shape in the rain
Posted by ganesh in Rain, ramanathapuram on November 13th, 2009
Due to dragging drainage work and recent rains
A big pothole on rain-battered Sigil Raja Veethi in Ramanathapuram.
An ambulance of a government hospital, which is supposed to be driven at a maximum speed in order to save the patients, took around seven minutes to cross Agraharam Road, an arterial road in Ramanathapuram, on Thursday.
The appalling condition of the road was the prime reason for the ambulance driver to drive it at an average speed of less than three km an hour. “I cannot comment much on the condition of roads since I am in government service. If you cannot maintain the road properly, you can just close it instead of allowing vehicles as it is totally unfit for vehicle transport,” the ambulance driver said on condition of anonymity.
Other roads
It is not the only road that is in bad shape. Other important roads such as Post Office Road, Sigil Raja Street, Vandikara Street, Salaitheru, Kasukadai Bazaar and Kenikarai, which are thronged by shoppers everyday, resemble Agraharam Road.
“An inordinate delay in execution of underground drainage scheme has paralysed the road system in the town. Big pits, dug up in several points of all streets about 15 to 20 months ago, have not been properly closed. In due course, the pits had become big and uneven to the level that even the body of the buses touches the road surface. We have petitioned the authorities innumerable times, but the problem remains the same,” said G. Kumar of Agraharam Road.
Several residents complained that they could understood the possible inconvenience owing to the execution of the Rs. 30-crore drainage project.
But, roads and streets where basic work of laying pipes, forming chambers and other works were completed should have been re-laid or at least temporary measures must have been taken to minimise hardships for road users, they said.
Many pointed out that the woes that started since the start of the drainage project work about three years ago had become worse due to the recent heavy rain.
In the absence of no remedial measures on the cards, they are wondering how long they should undergo the ordeal on roads.
“We understand the problems faced by the people on many fronts. Though nearly 80 percent of the works have been completed, we are not in a position to relay the roads. If we do so, some of them may have to be dug up for minor works again. Other government agencies also have the same problem,” Municipal Commissioner K.V. Balakrishnan told The Hindu.
He, however, said that Rs.3.36 crore had been sought from the government for taking temporary measures to repair the 35 roads running to a length of about 12.15 km in the town. Steps had been taken to get some other funds for setting right the problem temporarily.

The rain, which began at around 6 p.m., continued up to around 5 a.m., causing water inundation in many low-lying and seashore areas.
The worst affected areas were Verkodu and Mariamman Koil Street, where rainwater had entered around 80 houses. Utensils, clothes and other household articles floated as water entered into the living areas. Several houses in and around Muniasamy Temple were also affected. A few fish procurement centres of private companies functioning in the shore areas were also affected. The authorities, who visited the affected areas, promised that steps would be taken to pump out the water.

Autorickshaw drivers deplore bad condition of roads in the town

Autorickshaw drivers observed a fast here on Tuesday in protest against inaction by the authorities in settting right the deplorable condition of roads in the town.
Town president of Central Trade Union Congress G. Kumar and town secretary S. Nagarajan led the protest. S. Manibharathi, All India Trade Union Congress’s auto wing district secretary, N. Sivaji, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district secretary and 100 others took part. Most of the autorickshaws stayed off the roads as a mark of protest.
The drivers said that almost all roads had become slushy, causing hardship to road users.
The authorities were apprised of the situation many times but they took no step to solve the problem.
Citing underground drainage work for the bad condition of roads, the authorities refused to listen to the numerous petitions. If that was the reason, the roads should have been re-laid where such works had been completed

Following the season’s heavy rain in Ramanathapuram on Thursday, several low lying areas were inundated. Thangappa Nagar and Nehru Nagar were the worst affected areas. Streets were water logged for about three feet. Rainwater mixed with sewage and entered several houses in Thangappa Nagar.
Two trees were uprooted due to soil erosion in Ramanathapuram near the Collectorate and another at the Tamil Nadu Housing Board near Government Hospital. The trees were cleared by the authorities.
Rainwater entered into classrooms in Vallal Pari School here. Incidences of water logging were reported in Om Sakthi Nagar, Maha Sakthi Nagar, M.S.K. Nagar, Chinnakadai Street, Durairaj Chathira Street, Kenikarai, Lakshmipuram Agraharan and other places.
Public with complaints of water logging, breach of drainage, unhygienic environment, and others are knocking the doors of the municipality.
“There is no outlet for rainwater in Thangappa Nagar, which has become a stagnating centre for water coming from nearby Mariamman Street, Sigil Raja Street and Kattu Pillaiyar Koil Street. We are forced live with dirty water. We fear it will become worse in the forthcoming days,” says K. Suresh of Thangappa Nagar.
Collector T.N. Hariharan said clear instructions had been given to the municipal and Public Works Department authorities to take steps to drain water. Heath authorities were asked to take immediate action to start fogging operation to minimise mosquito breeding, he said.
