Armed gang escaped into darkness after attacking robbing of gold and Cash

A five-member armed gang escaped into darkness after attacking the owner and threatening the accupants of a house in Guduvancherry, robbing 21 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rupees 1.96 lakh in cash in the wee hours today.
Police here said armed gang, whose members came on motorcycles, knocked at the door of Landlord Paramsivan’s house at about 0420 hrs and hit him on the head with an iron rod.
As Paramasivan fell down unconscious, the gang threatened the inmates and escaped with the booty.
Paramasivan was admitted to a private hospital in Chengalpet.
Senior police officials visited the spot. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dog were pressed into service.
Police have arrested 5 held in connection with goat theft case

Police have arrested five people, including brother-in-law of former AIADMK M L A Mookan, in connection with the goat theft case at Barasinghapuram under Thuraiyur police limits near here last night.
Police said there were continuous theft of goats in Narasinghapuram village in the past few days. Followig this, the villagers formed a vigil committee in which the committee members were moving around their village throughout the night. While doing so, they intercepted a mini van which came to their village in a suspecious manner. The villagers detained all the five occupants of the van including one Ramasamy, the brother-in-law of former Uppiliapuram AIADMK M L A Mookan and later they handed them over to the police.
Priliminary enquiries revealed that the gang had stolen the goats in that village several times and they came for the same purpose last night when they were detained by the villagers,
Security beefed up at the Brahadheeswarar Temple after bomb scare

Security has been beefed up at the Brahadheeswarar Temple, famously known as Big Temple, the World Heritage Monument following a bomb scare.
The security agencies were on tenterhooks after Dr Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, received a letter a couple of days back warning a bomb blast at the temple, which is bracing up to celebrate the 1000th year anniversary.
Police said an anonymous letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor stated that he was taking revenge as he became jobless after being betrayed by the state Education Department officials.
He said he wanted to take revenge against the officials concerned and had planted bombs both at the Temple and Thanjavur Tamil University premises. The bombs might go off any moment today, he warned in the letter.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the Vice-Chancellor, two separate police teams comprising anti bomb squads conducted a thorough search at the Temple precincts and University complex but found that the threat turned out to be a hoax.
However, the district police intensified security at the Big Temple as a precautionary measure. Armed police personnel were posted in front of the Temple and devotees were allowed only after thorough search,
VCK 10 injured lathicharge of violence in Ambedkar anniversary celebrations

Ten persons,including activists of Dalit outfit Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and some policemen were injured in clashes and subsequent lathicharge during the 119th birth anniversary celebrations of B R Ambedkar at Periyakulam in this district tonight.
Police said the VCK activists also ransacked the local police station and damaged six Government buses.
They said violence broke out after police tried to persuade them to stop playing objectionable songs, which could create tension in the sensitive area and also told them that the time frame given for the celebrations was over.
The VCK activists entered into a heated argument with police,blocked vehicular traffic on a main road,pelted stones at police vehicles and ransacked the police station,they said.
Police then made a lathicharge to disperse them, they said, adding that 10 persons, including two were injured in the violence.
Police said some persons have been taken into custody in connection with the violence. The road blockade was lifted around 9:30 PM and the situation was under control.
Tirunelveli district police arrested eight quacks including a woman

After arresting two quacks last week, Tirunelveli district police arrested eight quacks including a woman, in a single day on Wednesday.

According to police, following the arrest of two quacks at Veeravanallur last week, a special team, led by Ambasamudram DSP Gopalan, conducted raids and arrested eight quacks on Wednesday from Ambasamudram, Kallidaikurichi, Alwarkurichi and Vikramasingapuram areas.
Asra Garg, SP, said the quacks had passed only Class X, Class XII and PUC. Some of the quacks were treating patients for 20 to 30 years.
The quacks were arrested under the Indian Medical Council Act. The drive against quacks would continue in other parts of the district, the SP added.
When Express contacted Tirunelveli Range DIG KP Shanmuga Rajeswaran said that medical practitioners were authorised to do practice only in a particular field and if they were found practising in unauthorised fields, they would be booked as per law, he added.
The arrested quacks were Papanasam (69) of Vaigaikulam, Indrani(40) of Bramadesam, Ravindran(37), Ramasami(64) of Kallidaikurichi, Manikavasakam (58) of Kela Earmalpuram, Purusothaman (40) of Kela Ambur, Thangarajan (50) of Alwarkurichi, and Annamalai Nagapan (49) of Vikramasingapuram.
Polling in the by-election to Pennagaram Assembly

Polling in the by-election to Pennagaram Assembly constituency in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu began this morning amid tight security.

As almost all the polling stations have been declared sensitive, a large number of police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure free and fair poll.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta said all arrangements have been made and police forces posted in all sensitive polling stations.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of DMK MLA P N Periannan. A total 31 candidates are in the fray. Prominent among them are P N P Inbasekaran (DMK), R Anbhazhagan (AIADMK), K G Kaverivarman (DMDK) and G K M Thamizhkumaran (PMK).
The bypoll is witnessing a four-cornered contest between the ruling DMK, its arch-rival AIADMK, the PMK and the DMDK.
All the leaders–Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, PMK founder-leader S Ramadoss and DMDK leader actor Vijayakanth, besides Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin campaigned for their candidates.
While the DMK fielded Inbasekaran, son of Periannan, PMK has nominated Tamizhkumaran, son of party president and legislator G K Mani.
Spurious drugs seized from a private godown

Spurious drugs valued at Rs one crore have been seized from a private godown here in the wake of authorities unearthing a racket in sale of expired medicines.

Special teams have been formed to trace five persons believed to be the main accused in the case, including one Meenakshisundram, a police release said.
A police team seized the expired and spurious drugs from a godown at Puraswalkam.
While seven persons have already been arrested in connection with the case, two others have surrendered before a local court, police said.
Police said they were coordinating with Drugs Control authorities to prevent sale of spurious and expired drugs.
Recently, police recovered spurious and expired drugs from different parts of the state including Chennai which were allegedly meant for sale after repackaging, following which Chief Minister M Karunanidhi directed officials to tighten vigil and prevent sale of such drugs.
He had instructed police and Drugs Control department officials to initiate stringent action against those involved in the trade and bring them to book.
Supporter of the Opposition AIADMK was hacked to death
A supporter of the Opposition AIADMK was hacked to death by supporters of a ruling DMK functionary due to previous enmity at suburban Guduvancherry last night.

Police said Ibrahim (23), who owns a juice shop, was having dinner with three of his friends, when a wordy duel broke out between him and Arun, son of DMK local functionary George.
The wordy duel turned ugly when Arun and his friends attacked Ibrahim with lethal weapons, killing him on the spot.
Police arrested Arun (28) and his friends Selvamani(26), Saravanan(25) and Prasanna (28) in connection with the murder.
A family of three died of burns at Thirumangalam
A family of three died of burns at Thirumangalam this morning.
The woman Shanthi (35) who was dejected over her husband’s drinking habit immolated herself and later plunged to embrace both her husband Thangapandian and daughter Janani, police said.
Thangapandian working in a tiffin centre used to come home drunk everyday. Getting irritated over this, Shanthi picked up a quarrel with him.
In one such fight on Sunday night, she immolated herself and further hugged her 3-year-old daughter Janani and husband.
All the three were rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College and hospital where they succumbed to burn injuries.
Based on a dying declaration from Thangapandian, police have registered a case and are investigating.
Locked house at Mannadi decamped with cash in north Chennai

A locked house at Mannadi in north Chennai was broken in by an unidentified man who decamped with cash amounting to Rs 1.87 lakh found in cupboard.

Sankar Raj (35) employed in a private firm was living with his family on Venkatesan Mesri Street at Mannadi.
On Friday, he along with family members locked the house and went to a relative’s house at Tambaram. When the family returned home at night, Sankar Raj was shocked to find the lock broken open and further noticed that cash amounting to Rs 1.87 lakh was missing from the bureau.
Following a complaint lodged by him, Esplanade Police have registered a case and a search is on to nab the culprit.
Bikers snatch chain from school teacher
Two motorcycle-borne men relieved a teacher of her 10-sovereign chain at Besant Nagar in Chennai yesterday and sped away, police said.

The incident took place when the teacher Lakshmi (58) was walking home from her school. Based on her complaint, Shastri Nagar police are on the lookout for the men.
Carpenter found dead in front of his house
A 36-year-old carpenter was found dead near Neelangarai on the outskirts of Chennai last night, police said.
Vijayakumar was spotted with his throat slit. His body was lying in a pool of blood near the front door of his house. On seeing this, neighbours alerted the police.
Interrogations with them revealed that victim had quarrelled with his wife Kalaiarasi last week and she left for her mother’s house with her two children.
The carpenter’s body has been sent for a post-mortem to Government Royapettah Hospital. Police are yet to conclude whether it was a case of murder or suicide.

Woman loses cash in moving MTC bus
A bag containing Rs 35,000 in cash was reportedly stolen from a woman commuter in an MTC bus in Chennai yesterday, police said.
The woman Selvi (35) boarded the bus at Saidapet to reach ICF.
When she opened her handbag to take out cash for the ticket, she found the purse containing the money missing. She lodged a complaint with Saidapet police in this connection.
