An impressive march-past by 61st Republic Day celebrations on 26 January
An impressive march-past by the Army, Air Force, Navy and Police forces, a cultural pageant providing glimpses of classical and folk art forms and the giving away of the ‘Anna Medals for Gallantry’ will mark the 61st Republic Day celebrations on 26 January.

The proposed moving 90-minute spectacle on Kamaraj Salai along the Marina Beach in the morning will unfold some of the finest pieces of the armed forces weaponry, a blend of cultural performers emphasising national integration and communal harmony, besides a flotilla on the achievements of the Tamilnadu government.
The celebrations will begin with the Governor Surjit Singh Barnala unfurling the national flag at 8 am, after he is received at the saluting base by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and introduced to heads of Army, Navy, Air Force, State Director General of Police, Chennai City Police Commissioner and other top officials.




Karunanidhi will then present the ‘Anna Medals for Gallantry’ to citizens from various parts of the State for their acts of bravery. He will also present the ‘Uthamar Gandhi Police Medal’ to police personnel for their outstanding work.
Even as school and college students will present a mixed carnival, leaders, government officials and public will watch it from places allotted to them.
A procession of floats will come as a finale to the celebrations, with as many as 25 departments of the Tamilnadu government, including agriculture, industries, health and family welfare and rural development, highlighting the achievements of the last four-and-a-half years.
In the evening, the Governor will host a tea party at the Raj Bhavan. The Chief Minister, his Cabinet colleagues, consular representatives and various dignitaries will grace the occasion.
Similarly, the national flag will be hoisted and cultural programmes will be held at several venues in the city and at district headquarters of the State to observe the 61th Republic Day of the country.

A day ahead of the anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, the Indian Maritime Forces have stepped up security measures along the South Eastern Coast (SEC) of Tamil Nadu to foil any infiltration bid by the terrorists.
A senior police official, quoting defence sources here today, said a high alert had been sounded along the South Eastern Coast by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in view of the recent intelligence alert of possible intrusion by terrorists to launch Mumbai-like attacks in important cities across the country.
Navy and ICG had positioned warships and patrol vessels along Palk Bay and Palk Straight and intensified patrolling along the Indian territorial waters.
The Naval Air Station at Uchipuli had been alerted and air surveillance had been enhanced on Palk Bay, Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar areas.
Besides, the Coastal Security Group (CSG) of Tamil Nadu Police, maintaining a round-the-clock vigil along the coasts, were also kept on high alert.
Fishermen were advised to carry their Identity Cards and not to cross International Maritime Boundary Line (MBL) for safety reasons,

The Indian Coast Guard Thursday announced the setting up of a mini air station in the port city of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu and assured sufficient protection for fishermen from Sri Lankan navy attacks
Speaking to reporters after calling on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here, Commander Coast Guard (Region East) A. Rajasekhar said: “The mini air station will set up on 50 acres of land in Tuticorin.”
Another such mini station is being set up in Ulundurpet around 150 km from here.
Queried about the attacks by the Sri Lankan navy on Indian fishermen, he said the chief minister too expressed concern over the matter and wanted the Coast Guard to protect the fishermen.
Indian fishermen protection to Coast Guard Commander assures
The Coast Guard(CG) would take all steps to protect the Indian fishermen from being attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel in the high seas, Commander, CG Region, East A Rajasekhar.
In a brief chat with newspersons after meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the State Secretariat here, he said the Chief Minister expressed concern over frequent attacks on the fishermen fishing in the high seas.
Mr Karunanidhi wanted the CG to take steps to protect the fishermen.
Mr Rajasekhar said he assured the Chief Minister that the CG would extend all possible help in this regard.
Commander Rajasekhar said the CG would set up an Air Station in the southern district of Tuticorin, for which 50 acres of land had been allotted by the Tamil Nadu Government.
Describing the meeting as a courtesy call, he said he thanked the Mr Karunanidhi for allotting the necessary land.
He said the CG would also set up a mini air station at Ulunderpet.
CPI protests for restoration of fishing rights in Tamil Nadu

The CPI local unit, led by Alangudi MLA S Rajasekaran, held a demonstration before the Revenue Divisional Officer’s Office at Arantangi to press for the restoration of fishing rights of fishermen of the state.
In a statement here today, party district Secretary S P Muthukumaran said the demonstration held yesterday was to urge the Union and the State Governments to restore the fishing rights of the fishermen of coastal villages in the district.
The demonstrators also condemned the reported atrocities committed against the district fishermen by the Sri Lankan Naval Personnel.
They wanted immediate and unconditional release of 18 fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and action on reported firing by them last week at the mechanised boat of the fishermen of Kottaipattinam.
