Leaders of Left parties Vaiko met AIADMK Jayalalithaa to discuss nation-wide hartal

Leaders of Left parties, along with MDMK general secretary Vaiko, on Friday met AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa to discuss preparations for the nation-wide hartal on April 27 to highlight spiralling prices of essential commodities owing to the new economic polices of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
A joint statement issued by the leaders called upon people to participate in the protest and make it a success.
“Our co-ordination will certainly continue in future,” Mr. Vaiko told reporters waiting outside Ms. Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence.
This is the first time that the leaders of the AIADMK front, formed during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, are coming together for joint action.
“It assumes significance in the sense that five political parties have joined hands against the Congress-led government at the Centre in which the DMK is a partner,” G. Ramakrishnan, State secretary of the CPI (M), told TheHindu.
The Left parties have been organising events and protests independently after the Lok Sabha elections. The CPI (M) even refused to share the dais with the AIADMK during by-elections to many Assembly constituencies, thought it supported the AIADMK candidates.
The PMK, which was part of the AIADMK combine in the Lok Sabha polls, snapped ties and rejected the offer of support by the AIADMK leadership in the by-election to Pennagaram.
Explaining the purpose of the meeting, Mr. Vaiko said economic policies of the UPA government had affected all sections of society. The cut in subsidy for fertilizers had led to increase in price of fertilizers and farmers were bearing the brunt.
“We call upon the people of Tamil Nadu, traders and trade unions to take part in the protest and make it a success,” said G. Ramakrishnan and senior CPI leader R. Nallakannu. Former State secretary of the CPI (M) N. Varadarajan, CPI deputy secretary C. Mahendran and general secretary of the Forward Bloc P.V. Kathiravan were among those who met Ms. Jayalalithaa. AIADMK whip K.A. Sengottaiyan and party MP M. Thambidurai were present.

Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko called on AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden Residence here today.
An AIADMK party press release described the meeting as a courtesy call.
The two leaders believed to have discussed the current political situation and the strategy for the March 27 Pennagaram Assembly bypoll.
MDMK Vaiko on before a Chennai court in a case against

MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Monday appeared before a Chennai court in a case against him for his speech on Eelam at a meeting in Chennai in October 2008.
Vaiko appeared before III Additional Sessions Judge here. The case has been posted for March 29. He was accompanied by party leader Nanjil Sampath and advocates.
A charge sheet had been filed against him under sections 124 A (sedition) IPC and section 13 (1) (d) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his speech.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has no ‘face’ to conduct the World Classical Tamil Conference after having “betrayed” the Tamil people in Sri Lankan and Mullaiperiyar issues.
Addressing reporters here, he said the Chief Minister was holding the conference for “personal glory and to hide the betrayal committed on the Tamil people”. He added that it was held to divert the attention from burning issues like price rise and the “murder of democracy as was witnessed in the recent by-elections.” He said the DMK leader was appealing for the support of all political parties for the conference after abetting the Central government’s help, including the arms assistance to the Sri Lankan Government in its battle against the LTTE and the genocide.
Vaiko, who recalled that an allparty resolution on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, said: What happened to that all-party resolution demanding a stoppage of war? Even for namesake, the Indian government did not ask the Sri Lankan government to stop the war. Chief minister, without blaming the Indian government for the suffering of the Sri Lankan Tamils, was now trying to shift the focus from the basic issues by holding the conference.
Vaiko said the Sri Lankan government would be living in fool’s paradise if it believes that the struggle for separate Tamil Eelam was over. “Thousands of innocent people have been killed in the war. How can they live together after all those killings?” he asked.
Vaiko said the State could also witness a referendum on Tamil Eelam in future as happened in Norway, France and Canada.
MDMK had already announced that it would not take part in the conference to be held in Coimbatore in June.
Vaiko behind bars the Mullaperiyar issue
MDMK general secretary Vaiko along with thousands of his supporters including farmers was arrested today for resorting to a road roko condemning the Kerala government, which is trying to construct a dam over Mullaperiyar.
When protestors led by the MDMK supremo who gathered at the VOC Ground in Cumbum tried to block an arterial road in the southern town, they were detained by the police, sources said.

Huge number of police personnel who were deployed to prevent any untoward incident took the agitators in vans, the sources added.
Addressing the gathering earlier, Vaiko alleged that the Union and the Kerala governments were cheating the people of Tamilnadu on the Mullaperiyar issue.
‘The Supreme Court has clearly said Tamilnadu government should carry out the maintanence works of the dam. But Kerala has passed a resolution in the Assembly over the safety of the dam. This is against the Constitution of India. Why has the Centre not questioned Kerala?’
He said financial restrictions should be imposed on Kerala.
A staunch supporter of the LTTE and sympathiser of Sri Lankan Tamils, Vaiko was earlier arrested by the Q Branch CID of the Tamilnadu Police in October 2008 on charges of sedition.
The charges are based on the speeches made at a party meeting on the Sri Lankan issue in Chennai. Vaiko warned that India extending help to protect Sri Lanka’s integrity would jeopardise India’s own unity and integrity.
He reportedly said he would be ready to take up arms and fight for the Tamils in the island nation. A general alert was sounded across Tamilnadu following the arrest.
