Planning an education loan mela in Madurai

Collector C. Kamaraj on Monday said that the district administration was planning an education loan mela in association with the banks in the district.
Addressing the inaugural function of Alagarkoil branch of the Union Bank of India, its eight branch in the district, he said that banks should focus on helping students and extending credit to the women self-help groups movement which are fuelling an economic revolution. He also noted that this was the 300 {+t} {+h} bank branch of the Madurai district.
He said that high loan targets have been fixed for banks in the district with many banks on track to achieve them. He also stressed on the repayment ethics. “Banks are also vital for economic growth.”
Mr. Kamaraj recalled that it was the nationalisation of banks in 1969 by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi that paved the way for mass banking.
Speaking earlier, S. Murali, Deputy General Manager, said that the bank had a total of 2,830 branches and 2,378 ATMs across the country.
Madurai region, one of the four regions of the bank in Tamil Nadu, comprised 12 districts.
Its total business was Rs. 2,286.13 crore including Rs. 1,147.81 crore in deposits and Rs. 1,138.32 in advances. The region had given Rs. 827.43 crore under agriculture loans and Rs. 228.77 crore for small and medium enterprises besides Rs. 89.60 crore for education loans.
On the occasion, the Collector distributed loan approvals for five students who were sanctioned Rs. 15 lakh totally, a business loan for Rs. 60,000 and two housing loans worth Rs. 30 lakh.
Sellur over-bridge open for public use in Nov: Swaminathan

The road over-bridge at Sellur here is expected to be thrown open for public use in the middle of November, Highways Minister M.P. Swaminathan said.
Inspecting the bridge here on Friday, he said that work on only six out of the 27 spans was pending. It was expected to be completed by October. Approach road for the Rs. 29-crore project would be completed by November 15.
After commissioning the bridge, work to lay approach roads for the subway there would be taken up.
On the increasing accidents on four-lane highways, Mr. Swaminathan said that failure to construct subways or flyovers at busy junctions on the highway had resulted in accidents. Provision of such facilities was overlooked during the survey conducted for the work, he added. The issue had been taken up with the National Highways Authority of India.
On the long pending demand of laying a Ring Road connecting Uthangudi with Samayanallur, he said a detailed project report had been sent to the Union Government for clearance.

Leading magazine TIME named Dr P Namperumal Swamy, Chairman of the Aravind Eye Care System , Madurai, to the ‘2010 TIME 100′ list, the magazine?s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

According to a Hospital press release here today, the magazine said “Dr Namperumalsamy, 70, and his army of cataract fixers at Aravind eye care hospital can, through a simple surgery,give a blind person eyesight back in less time than it take to read the Magazine.”
From 1976,the hospital which was founded with goal of bringing assembly-line efficiency to health care, figured out how to replace cataracts safely and quickly.They had performed 3.6 million Surgeries to date,a new one every 15 minutes.
The magazine also described the business model of the hospital as brilliant as 30 per cent of the patients can afford to pay subsidised free or low cost care for the 70 per cent who are poor.

Madurai Opposition sponsored Bharat Bandh on April 27
Madurai will be exempted from the Opposition sponsored ”Bharat Bandh”, on April 27, in view of the on going ”Chithirai” Festival.
A decision to this effect was taken at a consultative meeting of the opposition parties, led by the AIADMK in which the leaders of Left parties and MDMK also took part here today.
However, to express their protest, the parties have decided to stage a slogan shouting demonstration at ”Mela Masi Veedhi” and ”Vadakku Masi Veedhi” junction on that day.
The opposition has given the call for ”Bharat Bandh” on April 27 to condemn the spiraling prices of essential commodities.
”Chithirai” festival is among the most important annual festivals held at the World-renowned Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple at Madurai that attracts lakhs of devotees from various parts of the country and abroad. The festival is celebrated for 12 days during the Tamil month of ”Chithirai” during April-May.
Heavy rain in southern districts including Madurai

Many towns in southern districts, including Madurai, Theni and Tirunelveli, received rain on Sunday evening, thus bringing down the mercury level.

The rain was so heavy in Madurai that the inaugural function of the Chithirai exhibition at the Tamakkam Ground had to be hurriedly completed by the dignitaries led by Assembly Speaker R. Avudaiappan and Ministers. Places such as Vadipatti and Nagamalai pudukottai in the outskirts received heavy rain till 7 p.m.
For over an hour, the downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, brought in much needed respite from the heat wave.
Power failure was experienced owing to the rain in some parts of the city and its peripheries.
In Tirunelveli, there was a short spell of rain. Paramakudi recorded good rain on Saturday afternoon.
Though there were no rain in Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts, the heat wave had dipped on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department officials here said that Uthamapalayam in Theni district recorded 32 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by Thekkadi (28), Shanmuganadi (25), Gudalur (20), Periyar (10) and Vaigai dam (1).
According to Tamil Nadu Agricultural Weather Network website, Bodinaickanur in Theni district recorded 32.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, Paramakudi (51) and Mudukalathur (19.5) in Ramanathapuram district, Radhapuram (15.5), Tenkasi (31) and Vasudevanallur recorded 19 mm rainfall in Tirunelveli district.

There will be a power shutdown between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday in the following areas due to maintenance work to be undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at its Kappalur sub-station: Kappalur, Thiagarajar Mill, Uchchapatti, Thanakkankulam, Koothiyarkundu, Thoppur, Mullai Nagar, Austinpatti, Chettikulam and Karadikkal.

BSNL has commissioned nine new mobile phone towers

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has commissioned nine new mobile phone towers in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts.
The towers have been commissioned at Pudukottai, Marikundu and Veerapandi (Theni), Sevukampatti (Batlagundu), Anjukuzhipatti (Dindigul), Chennakarapatti (Tirumangalam), Kanappadi (Vedasandur), Boothampatti and Uthappanaickanur (Usilampatti).
Customers of these areas could buy SIM cards from the BSNL customer service centres, retailers, franchisees and during road shows. The popular ‘En Nanban’ scheme validity has been extended to June 26.

ZOHO Development Centre Campus interview
