Vijayakant responds to Karunanidhi’s criticism

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakant on Tuesday said that for the last 25 years he had been spending a major portion of his income on the poor and not keeping it in bank lockers or as assets.

Reacting to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s statement criticising him, Mr. Vijayakant said: “For the last 25 years, I have been helping the poor people to the possible extent. On the eve of my birthday, I implement several welfare schemes, using my money. It is not important how you earn money, but how you spend it.” He also pointed out that he had donated his ‘kalyana mandapam’ at Mamandoor to the people immediately after the construction.

Don’t infringe rights of states: DMK tells Centre

DMK

The ruling DMK party in Tamil Nadu Tuesday urged the central government to desist from actions that infringe upon the state’s rights and expressed opposition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and combined medical entrance examinations.

The party also urged the central government to take initiatives for the rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Resolutions to this effect were passed at a meeting of the party’s MPs chaired by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here.

DMK is part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance’s (UPA) at the centre.

Expressing opposition to the GST, the DMK said: “In a large country like India, a uniform tax structure would result in several hurdles and would affect the small scale sectors.”

Welcoming Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s announcement that GST will not be implemented without the consent of all the states, the party strongly urged the centre to desist from taking actions that would infringe upon the state’s rights in respect of taxation and education.

The party also resolved that the centre should permanently abolish combined entrance exams.

Faulting the Sri Lankan government for not rehabilitating the Internally Displaced Tamils in their respective habitats, the MPs said the former is acting against the Indian government’s views on their early resettlement.

Film clan under fire, writer Karunanidhi turns fighter

M. Karunanidhi, once a scriptwriter, can swap his pen for punches — if his clan is under attack.

The Tamil Nadu chief minister did so yesterday, questioning critics what was wrong if his sons and grandsons made their presence felt in Tamil cinema.

“If Prithvi Raj Kapoor’s family is in films till today, if Rajnikanth’s daughter can produce movies and his son-in-law Dhanush can act, what is wrong if my grandsons Kalanidhi, Udayanidhi, Dayanidhi, Arlunidhi and Arivunidihi are into film-making? It is just another conspiracy by the threaded class (Brahmins) because I work for the Dravidian community,” Karunanidhi said after laying the foundation stone for a colony for film workers.

Apparently, what piqued the DMK veteran was a cartoon in a Tamil magazine that suggested the state would soon get to see a movie scripted by Karunanidhi, produced by one grandson, directed by another and distributed by another and to be telecast on the family-owned Kalaignar TV. The cartoon was seen as a jibe at the grandsons taking over Tamil cinema — after Karunanidhi’s sons and daughters had entrenched themselves in politics.

But what Karunanidhi did not disclose was that all his family members he mentioned had, by a strange coincidence, entered cinema during the tenure of the present DMK government and within a short span, started wielding a virtual hegemony over production and distribution of big-ticket movies. “Karunanidhi has used his political might to thrust his entire family on Tamil cinema,” said Thuglak editor Cho Ramaswamy.

The feeling has been reinforced because, barring Sun Pictures promoted by Kalanidhi Maran, all other production/ distribution companies owned by the Karuna clan are promoted by first-timers.

M.K. Stalin’s son Udayanidhi Stalin, who started his production house Red Giant Movies in 2008, had earlier burnt his fingers running a bowling alley in central Chennai. But barring a couple of flops, all his productions and releases have proved to be runaway hits, and he now drives a Hummer. His latest movie will feature Kamal Haasan.

In the same year, Union chemicals minister M.K. Alagiri’s son Dayanidhi, just out of college, floated Cloud Nine Movies and outbid more established distributors to bag Vaaranam Ayiram, directed by hit director Gowtham Menon.

“It has become the unwritten rule in Tamil cinema today that only if these three companies do not show interest in a new production, can other distributors step in,” a producer said of the virtual monopoly wielded by the trio.

Even big stars are reluctant to commit themselves to other banners. For instance, all of actor Surya’s movies, the biggest grossers in the past two years, have been produced or released by Sun Pictures, Red Giant or Cloud Nine.

With Sun Pictures set to release the Rs 1,500-crore trilingual Endhiran — touted as the costliest Indian movie ever made with Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead — the stranglehold, established in such a short time, on Tamil cinema by the DMK’s first family is stronger than what the Kapoors enjoyed after decades of toil.

“It is not a level-playing field any longer since other producers or distributors do not enjoy the same political clout as the Karunanidhi family does,”

Govt decided to release a millennium coin and stamp on Big Temple

To mark the completion of the 1000th year of the Tanjavur Big Temple, constructed by Raja Raja Chola I, the State government has decided to release a millennium coin and commemmorative stamp. At a meeting chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Secretariat on Saturday, it was decided that a two-day ceremony will be held on 25 and 26 September in Thanjavur.
.
Apart from organising cultural events and seminars, the government has also decided to utilise the occasion to unveil a mega plan to improve the infrastructure of Thanjavur, including widening of roads.

A press release from the government said the two-day event would witness both folk and classical music and dance. On the first day, folk artists would perform in the streets across Thanjavur town.

In the evening, noted dancer Padma Subramaniam will lead a programme by 1,000 dancers on the premises of the Big Temple.

Nagaswaram concerts and Thirumurai singing by 100 Oduvars, the exponents of Thevaram and Thiruvchagam, will be held before the dance programme.

On the second day, seminars will be held in Thanjavur Tamil University while general conferences will be on the temple premises. Coins and stamps will be released at Thilakar Thidal. A historical exhibition will also be held.

At the meeting it was decided to invite Union Ministers, political leaders and various experts. As regards the reclamation of the statues of King Raja Raja and his consort Lokamadei, now in a private museum managed by Sarabhai foundation in Ahmadabad, the government is considering constituting a team of experts to examine the issue.

Finance Minister K Anbazhgan; Co-operative Minister Ko Si Mani; Transport Minister K N Nehru; Information Minister Parithi Ellamvazhuthi; Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister K R Periyakaruppan; School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu; Commercial Taxes Minister S N M Ubayadullah; Chief Secretary K S Sripathi; Tamil University Vice-Chancellor M Rajendran; noted archaeologist R Nagasamy; and DMK MP Kanimozhi, were among those who participated in the meeting.
History

The temple had its foundations laid out by the Tamil emperor Arulmozhivarman, popularly called Raja Raja Chola I, in 1002 CE , as the first of the great Tamil Chola building projects.

According to tradition, the temple was built by the Chola King Raja Raja in compliance of a command given to him in his dream.

The scale and grandeur is in the Chola tradition. An axial and symmetrical geometry rules the temple layout. Temples from this period and the following two centuries are an expression of the Tamils (Chola) wealth, power and artistic expertise.

The emergence of such features as the multifaceted columns with projecting square capitals signal the arrival of the new Chola style.

The Brihadeeswarar Temple was built to be the royal temple to display the emperor’s vision of his power and his relationship to the universal order.

The temple was the site of the major royal ceremonies such as anointed the emperor and linking him with its deity, Shiva, and the daily rituals of the deities were mirrored by those of the king.

There are many myths about the temple; one of the most popular is that the gopuram does not cast a shadow at any time of the day outside its perimeter – a testament to the early Dravidians’ mathematical prowess.

The temple is also an architectural exemplar showcasing the pure form of the Dravida type of temple architecture and representative of the Chola Empire ideology and the Tamil civilisation in Southern India.

The temples ‘testify to the brilliant achievements of the Chola in architecture, sculpture, painting and bronze casting’.
Complete granite temple

The Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as Rajarajeswaram, at Thanjavur, is the world’s first complete granite temple and a brilliant example of the major heights achieved by Cholas kingdom Vishwakarmas in temple architecture.

It is a tribute and a reflection of the power of its patron Raja Raja Chola I. It remains as one of the greatest glories of Indian architecture. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Great Living Chola Temples’.

PMK Ramadoss renews demand for prohibition was enforced

PMK founder leader S Ramadoss today said povery cannot be eradicated in Tamil Nadu unless total prohibition was enforced.

Welcoming Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s call to revitalise the agriculture sector to eradicate poverty and hunger made at a conference yesterday, Ramadoss said: “Strengthening agriculture alone will not eradicate poverty as the labourers spend 50 per cent of their earnings on consuming liquor. The government should close the liquor shops from August 15th to help poor live healthy and wealthy life.”

He opposed conversion of agricultural and horticultural lands into house sites. “We need regulatory mechanism to stop farm lands being converted into house sites.

Tamil Nadu Assembly meet on January 6

If the Public Works Department’s contractors manage to adhere to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s deadline, then the session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly summoned by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on January 6 will be its last at Fort St. George.

It will begin with the customary address by the Governor, who will spell out the government’s policies. A short session will follow, in which members will debate a motion of thanks on the Governor’s address.

Since the Assembly has to meet at least once every six months, it is imperative that the session is convened in the first half of January. The last session was prorogued by the Governor on July 21, 2009.

CLEAR DEADLINE

Mr. Karunanidhi wants to hold the budget session of the Assembly in March 2010 on the new premises in Government Estate, a deadline that the contractors and government agencies are striving hard to keep.

The Chief Minister was again at the construction site on Friday morning.

(He has held about 30 on-site inspections to date since the ground-breaking ceremony)

Mr. Karunanidhi reviewed the progress of works in specific segments of the mammoth structure.

The progress of works at the new complex has been “very impressive” for a government project, admit officials and contractors who work on government projects.

INITIAL HURDLES

Engineers familiar with the project say there was a lot of initial time loss, because of litigation, relocation of a temple, and the government itself shaving a few months off the project.

The machinery found it difficult to keep up with the needs of a project coming up at a rapid pace — the builders needed decisions on each issue such as minor alteration, and government officials, used to files and discussions, were on the learning curve. Decisions took time, but with the Chief Minister visiting the site often enough, the builders got their approvals fairly quickly.

There were a plethora of issues, ranging from altering original plans and working with bare sketches to delays in choosing the tiling for the floors.

CHANGE OF GUARD

The change of the then PWD Minister Durai Murugan was an additional handicap. Mr. Durai Murugan, who, at that point, had unhindered access to the Chief Minister, could give solutions to practical problems faced by the builders at short notice.

With all these handicaps, the builders hope to complete the physical structure by January-end. The rain has been a serious handicap with the winds making work at a height of 70 feet a risky proposition, says an official.

A visit to the site reveals hundreds of people working for multiple agencies making plans and going about their work. It is chaotic, with more than 2000 workers in an area less than a square km, but officials and engineers assure that everyone there has a task, and, more importantly, a deadline for it.
