Mayor P. Karthikeyan inaugurated an operation theatre complex of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital (run jointly with Aruna Eye Hospital), located at S.R. Arcade in Officers’ Line here on Thursday.
It has been established at a cost of Rs.4.5 crore.
Mr. Karthikeyan said the opening of the operation theatre complex is good news to people of Vellore, who previously had to go to the hospital in Chennai for advanced surgery and treatment. The facility would be a boon not only to people of Vellore but also residents of other towns in Vellore district, he said.
Amar Agarwal, Managing Director of Dr. Agarwal’s Group of Eye Hospital Limited, said the hospital decided to have the operation theatre complex at a separate building for two reasons, firstly the logistical advantage of separating operation patients from general out-patients, and secondly the lack of space in the existing hospital.
A unique feature of the operation theatre complex is the ‘gallery’ – a glass window through which attendants of patients could witness cataract surgery on a computer monitor, which would be kept close to the window. Separate rooms are provided for cataract surgery and Lasik dioptric laser surgery . Through the Lasik dioptric laser surgery, it is possible to correct short sight and long sight. Dr. Agarwal said the mission of the hospital is to bring world-class eye care within the reach of every individual. “Vellore has become an important hub, and our aim is to ensure that patients from here need not go to Chennai for eye surgery and treatment. While doctors from Chennai would be coming to the surgical centre, trained doctors from Vellore would always be available for treatment and surgery.”
P. Srinivasulu, Medical Director-Vellore, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, said the hospital provided treatment at affordable cost. It also provided surgery facilities for diabetic patients.
Rajagopal, Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, said all 28 hospitals run by the Agarwal group in Tamil Nadu were approved for cataract surgery under the Star Health Insurance Scheme for government servants and the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life-Saving Treatment run by the State government.
V.M. Sankaran, District Governor, Lions International District 324-A4, said the Lions District, in association with Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, had undertaken the task of screening 25 lakh schoolchildren in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, and providing free spectacles to one lakh schoolchildren. Suresh, vice-president of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, proposed a vote of thanks.
