TNEB hinted at a possible revision of tariff for a section of consumers

Citing “huge losses” and non-revision of tariff for the last seven years, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) today hinted at a possible revision of tariff for a section of consumers and said it had forwarded a proposal to Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission for consideration

“TNEB has recently made a proposal seeking small revision of electricity charges to consumers who can afford it since it is suffering from huge losses, with the last revision being done seven years back,” a TNEB press release here said.
The board cannot unilaterally revise tariff, it said.
Those who could come under the revised power tariff regime include domestic consumers consuming more than 200 units a month, educational institutions, cinema studios and theatres, the release said, adding that a majority of domestic consumers would not be affected by a possible price hike.
There will be no change in the provision of free power to farmers, while the tariff structure for religious places, powerlooms and handloom units would remain unchanged RPT while the tariff structure for religious places,powerlooms and handloom units would remain unchanged, the release said.
The Commission could only allow tariff revision after due consideration and holding public hearings on the proposal, it said, adding that all efforts would be taken to ensure that a majority of consumers were not affected. – Agencies
