Erode museum to host exhibition on A.W. Brough

Some of the items from A.W. Brough’s collection that will be on display at Erode museum.

Government Museum, Erode will soon hold an exhibition on life and times of Antony Watson Brough.

The exhibition is likely to be held in the first week of December to throw light on Brough (1861-1936), who arrived in Erode as a missionary towards the end of the 19th century to serve the people.

During his stay in Erode, historians say, Brough collected a variety of articles of day-to-day use. The articles were subsequently shipped to Australia where he spent the evenings of his life.

Museum sources told ‘The Hindu’ that he collected 295 objects, which included bronze bell for prayer, brass rice chatty, curry chatty, brass anklet, human sacrificial sword, metal comb, and much more.

Of the 295 objects Brough collected, the Australian Government, as part of a goodwill gesture, gave 33 items, which are now at the Government Museum in Chennai.

Brough’s is an important chapter in Erode because he established schools, worked for Dalits uplift and also played a role in Erode’s development.

Historian Pulavar S. Raju says Brough established a hospital in Erode, particularly to look after the health needs of Muslim women. Though the hospital is now called CSI Hospital, it is popularly known as Gosh Hospital. It is next to the church, named in his memory, on Brough Road.

He also set up one more hospital, in Chennimalai in memory of his son who died on the battlefront during World War I, the historian says.

In all, Brough established 94 schools in and around Erode and two hospitals.

C. Maheswaran, former Curator of Erode museum, says the missionary also worked for the uplift of Dalits by teaching them arts and craft. He concentrated his work in Kanji Koil and also served as Inspector of Matriculation Schools in the district. He adds that Brough also has the distinction of being a member of the then Erode Municipality. He was a nominated member.

Mr. Raju further says that in view of Brough’s contribution to the society, particularly Muslims, the Brough Memorial Church has Ya Kudah inscribed at the entrance.

The South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC), plan contemplate an ‘Students Artist Bank’ in schools.

The Director of South Zone Cultural Centre K.V. Giridhar interacts with prize-winners of The Hindu Young World Painting Competition in Tiruchi

The magnitude of response to The Hindu Young World Painting Competition has prompted the South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC), Thanjavur, to contemplate an association with the national newspaper to build ‘Students Artist Bank’ in schools.

The mandate of the school will be to form a ‘Cultural Club’ and register the same with The Hindu or the SZCC that has a jurisdiction over eight States. The Centre is eager to depute artistes to such schools to train the students in the art forms of their orientation.

The SZCC, which is prepared to put to use the enormous funding at its disposal for structuring the Herculean task, expects parents to extend their fullest cooperation to its initiative to prevent art forms from going extinct.

“Though there are 250 art forms in the State and about 3,000 in the country, only some – five to six in Tamil Nadu and 25 to 30 in the whole of India – are visible. Art forms can be documented and developed only through people’s involvement. Taking care of the present day artistes and generating artistes for future is highly essential,” P.V. Giridhar, Director, SZCC, said, distributing prizes to winners of the ‘The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2009’ here on Sunday.

Likening artistes to Soldiers, Mr. Giridhar explained that the former protect and safeguard the country’s culture. The role of parents is to identify the artistic instincts of their wards and make them surface. “Art and culture must be considered as duties rather than as hobbies. There must be an artiste in every family,” said Mr. Giridhar, observing that continuous improvement to the quality of art forms will determine their perennial perfection.

Mr. Giridhar honoured all the 20 prize winners. The prize-money was higher this year. The first three winners in Seniors Category went home richer by Rs. 5,000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2000 respectively. For the Juniors, the prize amounts were Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000. The 14 consolation prize winners received Rs. 500 each. Additionally, all received sponsors’ freebies. Lotte Caramilk was the title sponsor, Pepsico Cheetos Whoosh the snacks sponsor, and ARC Aqua Puraa the water sponsor.

According to the Regional General Manager R. Srinivasan, an exhibition cum sales of the prize-winning paintings was under contemplation. The proceeds will be used for charity,
