Erode museum to host exhibition on A.W. Brough

Some of the items from A.W. Brough’s collection that will be on display at Erode museum.

Government Museum, Erode will soon hold an exhibition on life and times of Antony Watson Brough.

The exhibition is likely to be held in the first week of December to throw light on Brough (1861-1936), who arrived in Erode as a missionary towards the end of the 19th century to serve the people.

During his stay in Erode, historians say, Brough collected a variety of articles of day-to-day use. The articles were subsequently shipped to Australia where he spent the evenings of his life.

Museum sources told ‘The Hindu’ that he collected 295 objects, which included bronze bell for prayer, brass rice chatty, curry chatty, brass anklet, human sacrificial sword, metal comb, and much more.

Of the 295 objects Brough collected, the Australian Government, as part of a goodwill gesture, gave 33 items, which are now at the Government Museum in Chennai.

Brough’s is an important chapter in Erode because he established schools, worked for Dalits uplift and also played a role in Erode’s development.

Historian Pulavar S. Raju says Brough established a hospital in Erode, particularly to look after the health needs of Muslim women. Though the hospital is now called CSI Hospital, it is popularly known as Gosh Hospital. It is next to the church, named in his memory, on Brough Road.

He also set up one more hospital, in Chennimalai in memory of his son who died on the battlefront during World War I, the historian says.

In all, Brough established 94 schools in and around Erode and two hospitals.

C. Maheswaran, former Curator of Erode museum, says the missionary also worked for the uplift of Dalits by teaching them arts and craft. He concentrated his work in Kanji Koil and also served as Inspector of Matriculation Schools in the district. He adds that Brough also has the distinction of being a member of the then Erode Municipality. He was a nominated member.

Mr. Raju further says that in view of Brough’s contribution to the society, particularly Muslims, the Brough Memorial Church has Ya Kudah inscribed at the entrance.

Sugarcane farmers have asked the Union and State governments to hike the minimum support price

Sugarcane farmers have asked the Union and State governments to hike the minimum support price to Rs. 2,000 a tonne.

At a State-level meeting of sugarcane farmers, held here on Monday, the farmers said the current price Rs. 1,437 was not remunerative and that it would dissuade farmers from cultivating sugarcane.

The farmers led by State president S.A. Chinnasamy also wanted the Government to direct the sugar mills to bear the harvest and transport expenses, which at present were borne by the farmers.

They also sought the repeal of an Act that directs sugar mills not to pay more than the Government-fixed price for sugarcane.

The farmers warned that if the Government did not heed their suggestions on price, the area under sugarcane cultivation would comedown, and the Country would be forced import sugar.

And the cost at which the nation would import sugar would be more than what the farmers would demand, they argued and wanted the Government to encourage sugarcane farmers by hiking the minimum support price.

The farmers other demands included protection of Cooperative sugar mills and the repayment of the money the Government collected from farmers for setting up co-generation plants in Cooperative mills.

Erode hospital gets high-tech equipment for radiotherapy

ERODE:

Apollo Hospital has moved towards providing global care in cancer treatment with the launch of CyberKnife.

A.N. Vaidhyswaran, MD, senior consultant, Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital told journalists in Erode on Sunday that with “the world’s first and only” robotic radio surgery system, the Hospital had so far treated 100 persons with intracranial, spine, lung and prostrate tumours.

A handout issued by the Hospital says CyberKnife is a state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment for robotic radio surgery that allows radiation oncologists to treat pathologies painlessly, without the need for an operation.

It uses pencil beams of radiation which can be directed at any part of the body, from any direction with the help of a robotic arm. The system tracks the tumour’s position, detects any movement of the tumour, and automatically corrects its positioning.

It then targets the tumour with multiple beams of high-energy radiation, destroying abnormal tissue without damaging surrounding areas.

No anaesthesia

Dr. Vaidhyswaran told reporters that the “sophisticated” treatment could be used as an alternative to open surgery, as it does not cause pain and therefore do not require anaesthesia. He added that the recovery time was quick and many of the complicated procedures associated with other conventional cancer therapies were minimised or eliminated by the CyberKnife system. Dr. T.P. Bharadwaj, haematologist, Apollo Hospitals, also participated and spoke about common blood diseases and cancer.

He said about 50 per cent of the Indian population was affected by anaemia. Pointing out that one-third of children of school-going age were anaemic, he said.

“Although Iron density in boys and girls was similar, the lower food intake by adolescent girls compared to boys, combined with menstrual losses, causes adolescent girls to be at great risk of iron-deficiency anaemia.” Dr. Bharadwaj also said that about 70 per cent of women suffered anaemia during pregnancy, which was caused by poor dietary intake of iron and other reasons.
