Ruled out the opposition’s demand resignation of A. Raja

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday ruled out the opposition’s demand for the resignation of Telecom Minister A. Raja over the 2G controversy.
Telecom Minister A. Raja
When asked by reporters about the demand for Raja’s ouster, Karunanidhi said: “I have not come here to convey good news to you people,”

His remarks on Raja comes days after the entire opposition stalled Parliament proceedings over a newspaper report, which claimed the CBI has evidence against Raja in the spectrum case.

Karunanidhi will meet the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi.

Raja represents the DMK in the Union Cabinet and is reportedly close to Karunanidhi.

Earlier in the week, opposition stalled proceedings in parliament over a demand for Raja’s resignation due to alleged irregularities in 2G-spectrum allotment.

However, DMK sources have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is embroiled in two major allegations — the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order Karunanidhi has remained soft on him.

Karunanidhi will also meet President Pratibha Patil and will invite her for the inauguration of the World Tamil Conference.

Govt was taking all necessary steps to tackle the power crisis

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the government was taking all necessary steps to tackle the power crisis in the State. He also sought the cooperation of the people and ‘understand the situation of the government’.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi
In a statement here, the Chief Minister expressed hope that the issue would be resolved once electricity was generated through windmills in the month of May.

Stating that electricity shortage is the one issue faced by all the States in India, he said the situation was worse in other southern States when compared to Tamilnadu.

‘We are providing 24 hours electricity supply to Chennai whereas the situation is not so in cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore. Only three hours of power cut is implemented in other parts of Tamilnadu whereas the duration of electricity cuts is much higher in other States.’

The Chief Minister, who said that he held a meeting with the Electiricy Minister Arcot N Veerasami, higher officials of the department and a representative from the corporate sector earlier in the day, added that he had instructed the officials to ensure that public were not much affected by the power crisis.

‘We are aware that the people are put to hardship due to the cut in electricity supply. But implementing electricity projects overnight is not possible. The previous AIADMK government should have started power projects in its regime having in mind the future demand. Since it failed to do so, the State is suffering now,’ he said.

Elaborating the steps taken by the DMK government to increase power generation, Karunanidhi said, ‘but it will take some more time for these projects to get final shape. The issue will come to an end once these projects are completed.’

He said the State government is doing its best in buying power from other sources. ‘Already the maximum possible electricity is being bought from all possible sources. Since it is a national issue, we are unable to go beyond a limit,’
