Countdown for AIADMK’s victory started : Jayalalithaa

Opposition AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa today said the countdown for the party’s victory (in the ensuing Tamil Nadu Assembly elections due in nine months) started and exhorted the party workers to be vigilant and start preparing for it.

The party workers should be vigilant to defeat the money power of the ruling DMK regime headed by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that would pose obstacles to our victory path, she said, while speaking after solemnising the marriages of party workers at a function on the outskirts of the city.

Buoyed over the large gathering of party workers, she said, “I want to convey an important message to you. The time for reaping the harvest of victory has started from this second.” Linking the countdown usually announced by space scientists for launch of satellites, Ms Jayalalithaa said “What we call as countdown in scientists parlance has stared now for the AIADMK’s march to the path of victory.” Stating victory was in the doorsteps of the party (meaning that the AIADMK is poised to win the ensuing Assembly polls), the AIADMK Supremo called upon the party workers to gear up to defeat the money power of the ruling DMK and ensure party’s victory.

‘Be prepared…victory is calling us’, she said, giving a fresh boost to the party cadres to work tirelessly during the ensuing elections.

AIADMK J Jayalalithaa warned of agitations on CET

AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Thursday warned of agitations if the Union government introduces a Common Entrance Test (CET) at the national level for admission to medical and technical institutions.

CET would affect the State government’s reservation policy of 69 per cent in educational institutions, as the quota would be reduced to 50 per cent, she said in a statement, adding that it would spell the death knell for the social justice movement in TN.

Jayalalithaa alleged that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was adopting double standards on the CET issue. Instead of taking decisive action to spike the move, he was merely writing letters to the Centre. If he was really interested in safeguarding the social justice movement, then he should go to Delhi and take up the matter with PM Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, she said. Karunanidhi should explain to them the difficulties faced by rural students, especially from TN, and ensure that the proposal was drop ped. If the UPA does not fall in line, then the DMK should withdraw support to the Centre, she said.

Jayalalithaa argued that the proposed CET would only favour students living in urban areas, as question papers would be only in English or Hindi. She feared that many students from rural areas in TN, might not be able to clear the CET, as the medium of instruction at school for most of them is Tamil.

Jaya Makes Charity Pitch At Iftar Party

Politicos got a glimpse of another facet of AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa at an Iftar party on Wednesday — that of a storyteller.

At the party hosted by the AIADMK, Jayalalithaa observed that as the five tenets of Islam — religious faith, the daily recital of Quran, fasting, helping others and undertaking the Hajj — were mandatory for Muslims, the holy month of Ramzan gave ample opportunities to fulfill two of them — fasting and charity.

She then narrated the story of a football that complained to God that despite the fact that both the football and the flute were filled with air, people treat each differently. While they put the flute to their lips, they kicked the ball around, it rued. The Lord smiled and said, “How you handle air makes all the difference. The flute receives air and releases it in the form of melodious music. But you (the football) retain the air you get, so you get kicked around.”

The moral of the story: history praises and records the deeds of those who are generous, while time punishes stingy fellows, she added. Drawing a parallel with the Muslim belief, she said everybody should be ready to share he has with the disadvantaged sections of society.

The Iftar party was attended by MDMK general secretary Vaiko, CPM leader N Varadarajan, CPI State secretary D Pandian, Arcot nawab Mohd Abdul Ali, Jawahirullah of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, Dr N Sethuraman, Hyder Ali, Inayathullah, AIADMK MLAs and other party officer bearers.
