Spurious fertiliser and pesticides manufacturing unit sealed

A spurious fertiliser and pesticides manufacturing unit at Kavindapady near here has been sealed by Agriculture department officials.

This followed complaints from farmers that fertiliser purchased from the unit had damaged their turmeric crop. The farmers had also resorted to a road-roko here last week in this regard.

Department officials said a raid on the unit revealed that the ‘fertiliser’ was being packed and put in bags with the labels of popular fertiliser companies. These were then sold in the market.

A search was on for the owner of the unit while his wife and a saleswoman were arrested,

Armed gang escaped into darkness after attacking robbing of gold and Cash

A five-member armed gang escaped into darkness after attacking the owner and threatening the accupants of a house in Guduvancherry, robbing 21 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rupees 1.96 lakh in cash in the wee hours today.

Police here said armed gang, whose members came on motorcycles, knocked at the door of Landlord Paramsivan’s house at about 0420 hrs and hit him on the head with an iron rod.

As Paramasivan fell down unconscious, the gang threatened the inmates and escaped with the booty.

Paramasivan was admitted to a private hospital in Chengalpet.

Senior police officials visited the spot. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dog were pressed into service.

TN police has sought the Interpol investigation of 12 online cheating cases

The CB-CID wing of Tamil Nadu police has sought the assistance of Interpol in the investigation of 12 online cheating cases with the arrest of Nigerian nationals in some cases in the state.

‘In most of the cases, Nigerians are the masterminds and the Cybercrime wing of CB-CID has arrested four Nigerians,’ the investigating agency said in a release here.

The online crimes include lottery and job frauds and the agency has registered 13 cases this year and 25 since 2007.

The Nigerians used to recruit Indian account holders, called money mules, to provide their bank account details, ATM and other bank details for a commission.

In these types of online cheating, the culprits randomly choose mobile numbers and send group SMS and e-mails luring victims saying they had won an high prize in cash or lottery draw in the names of established brands, asking them victims to respond by paying a small sum as processing fee for ‘realising the money,’ the release said.

‘At times, the victims of these frauds are persuaded to part with important personal details like bank account number and credit card number which could cause further damage,’ it said. A similar Modus Operandi was being followed for job frauds when people were asked to pay money for various purposes only to be duped, the release added.

The CB-CID has arrested four Nigerians from Mumbai and 14 Indian account holders/ money mules from Chennai,Mumbai and Bangalore among others who were involved in various cases of online cheating.The Cyber Crime cell has also sought assitance of Interpol in the investigation of 12 cases of online cheating, the release said.

Police said people should not respond to such SMS/e-mails and desist from disclosing personal banking details.

In a recent case, a Tircuhirappalli-based businessman lost lakhs of rupees after such culprits managed to siphon off money through fraudulent means.

Police have arrested 5 held in connection with goat theft case

Police have arrested five people, including brother-in-law of former AIADMK M L A Mookan, in connection with the goat theft case at Barasinghapuram under Thuraiyur police limits near here last night.

Police said there were continuous theft of goats in Narasinghapuram village in the past few days. Followig this, the villagers formed a vigil committee in which the committee members were moving around their village throughout the night. While doing so, they intercepted a mini van which came to their village in a suspecious manner. The villagers detained all the five occupants of the van including one Ramasamy, the brother-in-law of former Uppiliapuram AIADMK M L A Mookan and later they handed them over to the police.

Priliminary enquiries revealed that the gang had stolen the goats in that village several times and they came for the same purpose last night when they were detained by the villagers,

In a suspected case of honour killing, Rengasamy, a tractor mechanic, unable to tolerate the activities of his eighteen-year-old daughter, murdered her with the help of his relatives.

The girl living in Ramanathan Street at S S Colony, used to frequently converse with her boy friends over mobile phone.

To put an end to continuous talk, Rengasamy, suspecting that she was having affairs with several boys, sent her to a relative’s house in Chennai to continue her education.

Even at Chennai, she did not mend her ways.

Her cell phone was snatched and she was returned to Madurai recently.

She was also forced to discontinue her education.

An infuriated Rengasamy colluded with his relatives Moorthy, Velmurugan and a private hospital compounder Balu and hatched a plan to kill his daughter to retain the honour of the family. They administered with a poisonous injection to the girl and also poured the poison into her mouth at her residence.

The incident took place on Tuesday between 9 am and 2.30 pm.

She informed her mother about the treatment meted out to her by her relatives.

The girl was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where she died on Tuesday night.

Based on a complaint lodged by her mother R Lakshmi, police arrested Moorthy, Velmurugan and Balu.

They are on the look out for Rengasamy, who has been absconding since the report of the incident.

A special team has been formed to arrest Rengasamy.

Security beefed up at the Brahadheeswarar Temple after bomb scare

Security has been beefed up at the Brahadheeswarar Temple, famously known as Big Temple, the World Heritage Monument following a bomb scare.

The security agencies were on tenterhooks after Dr Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, received a letter a couple of days back warning a bomb blast at the temple, which is bracing up to celebrate the 1000th year anniversary.

Police said an anonymous letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor stated that he was taking revenge as he became jobless after being betrayed by the state Education Department officials.

He said he wanted to take revenge against the officials concerned and had planted bombs both at the Temple and Thanjavur Tamil University premises. The bombs might go off any moment today, he warned in the letter.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the Vice-Chancellor, two separate police teams comprising anti bomb squads conducted a thorough search at the Temple precincts and University complex but found that the threat turned out to be a hoax.

However, the district police intensified security at the Big Temple as a precautionary measure. Armed police personnel were posted in front of the Temple and devotees were allowed only after thorough search,

Prevented the marriage of a minor girl

Police today prevented the marriage of a minor girl fixed by her parents with a 24-year-old man here.

Acting on a complaint from the 13-year-old girl’s uncle about the wedding fixed for early this morning, police rushed to the marriage hall at Sellur here before it was solemnised and instructed her parents not to conduct the ceremony.

They also took an undertaking from the parents that they would not marry her off till she attained the age of 18.

District Social Welfare officer Jayalakshmi said parents of the girl were warned against child marriage.

Four panchloha idols of Goddess Amman seized, 2 held

The Idol Wing police of Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has seized four panchaloha idols of Goddess Amman worth Rupees 25 lakh and arrested two people in this connection.

Talking to reporters here today, EOW ADGP S K Dogra said acting on a tip-off, police detained two people at Kamarajar Salai on the beach road and seized the idols from their possession.

The duo, Justin of Lalgudi and Alwin Prabhakaran of Ariyualur, had come to the city to sell the idols to local traders, when they were nabbed.

During interrogations, it was revealed that the duo along with two others had stolen six idols from Greedhapurishwar Temple in Thanjavur district and buried them on the banks of river Cauvery.

They brought the two to Chennai to sell them.

Based on their confession, police recovered four idols of Lord Nataraja, Sivagami Amman and Chandrasekar from the banks of the river, the ADGP said.

Five held were arrested for threatening women police official

Five persons, including two women, were arrested for threatening a woman police sub inspector at Veeravanallur police station here, police said here today.

Police said the five, introducing themselves as human rights activists, approached the sub inspector on Sunday and asked for documents regarding the arrest of one Suresh, who was booked under Goondas Act few months back.

As they did not carry any valid identity cards issued either by state or national Human Rights Commissions, she refused to give the documents following which they threatended the police official.

Woman’s abduction: Madras HC ordered suo motu Contempt notice against SP,Inspector

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today ordered suo motu contempt notice against a Superintendent of Police and Inspector for not taking action against three persons who allegedly abducted a 42-year-old woman and robbed jewels weighing 35 sovereigns and cash to the tune of Rs.1.4 lakh.

A Division Bench of Justice K.Suguna and Justice S.Palanivelu directed the registry to issue contempt notice to the Sivaganga District SP and Inspector of Sivaganga town Police station.

The court was admitting a Habeas corpus petition filed by the woman’s husband who alleged that the police did not take steps to trace his wife who was abducted by neighbours.

The notice was ordered as there was no response from the Police to its order to trace the woman.
