Salem police rescued a 14-year-old boy within 12 hours 5 held

In a swift operation, the Salem police rescued a 14-year-old boy within 12 hours after he was kidnapped by a gang that had held him for ransom on Saturday night. All the five kidnappers were arrested.

Rohit (14), son of Sivaji (47), a silver merchant of Aryagoundanpatti, who was living with his grandmother at Seth village in Darbur district of Maharashtra, had come to his parents’ house during the summer vacation.
According to police, Rohit went out on a moped on Saturday night. At about 7 pm, a youth asked him for a lift. After they travelled some distance, the youth pulled out a knife, asked to stop the vehicle and follow him. Four more youth joined the two at a particular place.
Sivaji received a call around 9 pm demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh and the caller threatened to kill the boy if the money was not paid. Sivaji agreed to give Rs 2 lakh in cash and the balance in the form of silver bars.
While negotiations were on, neighbours came to know of the kidnap and informed the police, who instructed Sivaji to fix a place where the money could be handed over to the captors. The kidnappers told Sivaji to meet them at a remote place in Aryagoundanpatti. The neighbours and the police followed him at a distance. While Sivaji was handing over a bag of money, the police and neighbours swooped down and overpowered the gang.
According to the police, two of the gang members who threatened to knife the boy and tried to get away, were caught. In the melee, Rohit’s hand was injured with a knife. Interrogations revealed that the kidnap was executed by some unemployed youth who wanted to earn some quick money. The arrested include Manikandan (19) and Raj (23) from Selathanpatti, Palanisamy (20), Sivaprakash (23) and Srinivasan (21) from Ariyagoundenpatti.
CoP Sunil Kumar Singh gave a cash award to the team of police that rescued the boy in less than 12 hours.
Suburban police reovered over 175-sovereign worth gold jewellery

Suburban police have reovered over 175-sovereign worth gold jewellery, Rs 8 lakh in cash and six cell phones totally valued at Rs 29 lakh following breakthrough in 40 cases in and around the suburbs.

Talking to reporters today, Suburban Police Commissioner S R Jangid said they have solved cases pending in 2008 and 2009 and arrested 11 persons in connection with various offences.
Of particular interest, he said was the recovery made in a case in which a 23-year-old woman was robbed by two men who tied her up and escaped with 18 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Four persons Suriyan alias Shiva Suriyan (47), Ganapathy (53), Sudhakaran alias Container Sudhakar (33) and Satheesh (21) in connection with the incident. Following their interrogation, police found out they were also wanted in a number of waylaying incidents at Saint Thomas Mount and Adambakkam areas, he said. Based on their confession, a police team seized 26-sovereign gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from their possession.
In a house burglary case at Maduravoyal, police have arrested Prabhu (27) and seized 25-sovereign gold jewellery from him.
Also, in connection with a waylaying incident in 2009 in which Ravichandran was relieved of Rs 3.81 lakh cash he had withdrawn from the bank, police arrested Venkatesh (21) and recovered Rs 1.15 lakh in cash.
Over 45-sovereign gold jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh have been recovered from Mannar alias Mallar Mannan who had involved in house break-ins at Madipakkam, Pallikaranai, Adambakkam and Selaiyur.
Four bike borne men who were wanted in a series of chain-snatching incidents at Porur, Poonamallee, Ambathur, Korattur, Maduravoyal, Avadi, Thirumullaivoyal and Chitlapakkam were arrested and 54-sovereign gold jewellery worth Rs six lakh were recovered from them, he said.
Speaking on the development in the double murder case involving a rowdy and an advocate near Poonamallee Court complex recently, Jangid said police have nearly identified the 17 persons who were absconding in the case and added that they would be arrested soon.
It may be recalled that police have already arrested four persons, a part of a hired gang in connection with the murder case on 6 May.
Man cheating huge sum of money promising jobs in Singapore

A 30-year-old man, who had cheated 12 people by collecting huge sum of money promising jobs in Singapore, was arrested at the Chennai International Airport this morning and brought here for questioning.

Police sources said the person R Suresh (30), working as a crane operator in Singapore, was arrested by the Immigration authorities, when he arrived from Singapore.
Following complaints from affected people who had given him money ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh, the Cuddalore District police had informed the Immigration authorities, who detained him at the airport soon after his arrival.
They informed the Cuddalore district police about his detention following which a special team headed by Inspector M Ratnavel went to Chennai, arrested him and brought here for questioning.
Police seized ‘hawala’ money of Rupees 42 lakh

Police have seized ‘hawala’ money to the tune of Rupees 42 lakh after nabbing and interrogating five people who were moving about suspiciously at the bus stand here late last night.

According to Cuddalore DSP Mr Stalin, two head constables Murthy and Venkatesan were on night patrolling at the bus stand when they noticed the five culprits.
He said when they did not give convincing replies on being confronted, the two head constables informed the matter to Tiruppapuliyur police station. Following this, Inspector S Sudaravadivel and Sub Inspector Ananad Babu rushed to the spot.
While being questioned at the police station, the five surrendered the money they were clandestinely carrying with them. The money was packed in dif ferent bundles of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denominations.
The five from whom the bundles were seized, were identified as Al Faizal (32) of Thattucheri village in Nagapattinam district, A Asraf Ali (54) from Dindigul district, B Eswar (43) from Chennai, A Akbar Sadiq (34) of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district and Zakir Hussein of Kanniyakumari, he said.
He said the police however, could not extract any information about who had given them the ‘Hawala’ money and to whom it was to be handed over.
The police made a formal arrest under Sections 41 and 102 of CrPC and produced them before Judicial Magistrate 3 this morning.
Burglars broke open house with 10-sovereign of jewels and cash
Burglars broke open a retired teacher’s house at Purasawalkam on Tuesday evening and decamped with 10-sovereign of jewels and cash amounting to Rs 4,000.

Police said Helen Raymond (69), the retired teacher, after locking the house went out at about 7 30 pm on Tuesday.
When he returned back at 9 pm, he was shocked to see the front door of the house was broken open and found jewels, cash and others valuables missing. He lodged a complaint with the Vepery police which have taken up the investigation.
Chain snatched from woman
A three-sovereign chain was relieved of a woman at Sowcarpet on Tuesday.
According to police, the victim Prabhavathy of Sowcarpet was relieved of her chain by a motorcylce-born men while she was returning home from her office in Elephant Gate.
The identity of the culprits is yet to be known. A case has been registered at the Elephant Gate Police station and further enquiry is on.
Three crore Ganja packs Seized in oil tanker

Sleuths from the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau intercepted an oil tanker filled with ganja packs worth Rs three crore at Vadaapalani in Chennai Sunday. The narcotics were reportedly on their way to Theni from Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

One person was arrested and a search was on for six others, including a dealer from Madurai, said reports. Following a specific information, an NIB team conducted vehicle checks outside the Vadapalani bus stop on Saturday night during which the tanker was found.
The police arrested K Karthikeyan, driver of the tanker. The police believe that this could be a part of bigger network operating in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
“This is the first time we are coming across such a modus operandi by narcotics smugglers. We had a very useful input based on which we intercepted the oil tanker filled with dry ganja in Vadapalani,” said Additional Director General of Police (crime) K P Mahendhran.
Locked house at Mannadi decamped with cash in north Chennai

A locked house at Mannadi in north Chennai was broken in by an unidentified man who decamped with cash amounting to Rs 1.87 lakh found in cupboard.

Sankar Raj (35) employed in a private firm was living with his family on Venkatesan Mesri Street at Mannadi.
On Friday, he along with family members locked the house and went to a relative’s house at Tambaram. When the family returned home at night, Sankar Raj was shocked to find the lock broken open and further noticed that cash amounting to Rs 1.87 lakh was missing from the bureau.
Following a complaint lodged by him, Esplanade Police have registered a case and a search is on to nab the culprit.
Bikers snatch chain from school teacher
Two motorcycle-borne men relieved a teacher of her 10-sovereign chain at Besant Nagar in Chennai yesterday and sped away, police said.

The incident took place when the teacher Lakshmi (58) was walking home from her school. Based on her complaint, Shastri Nagar police are on the lookout for the men.
Carpenter found dead in front of his house
A 36-year-old carpenter was found dead near Neelangarai on the outskirts of Chennai last night, police said.
Vijayakumar was spotted with his throat slit. His body was lying in a pool of blood near the front door of his house. On seeing this, neighbours alerted the police.
Interrogations with them revealed that victim had quarrelled with his wife Kalaiarasi last week and she left for her mother’s house with her two children.
The carpenter’s body has been sent for a post-mortem to Government Royapettah Hospital. Police are yet to conclude whether it was a case of murder or suicide.

Woman loses cash in moving MTC bus
A bag containing Rs 35,000 in cash was reportedly stolen from a woman commuter in an MTC bus in Chennai yesterday, police said.
The woman Selvi (35) boarded the bus at Saidapet to reach ICF.
When she opened her handbag to take out cash for the ticket, she found the purse containing the money missing. She lodged a complaint with Saidapet police in this connection.

Police have arrested seven people and seized three idols, worth Rupees 3.5 lakh, from their possession.

The idols were reportedly stolen from Somasundareswarar NithyaKalyani Temple at Serakulam in the district on September 28, 2004, DIG (Tirunelveli Range) K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran told reporters here yesterday.
The arrested were identified as A Shanmuga Velayutham (36) of Serakulam, P Murugan (35) of Naduvakurichi, S Mariappan (35) of Naduvakurichi, A Ganesan (27) of Samathanapuram, N Muthu (31) of Melapalayam, K Sankar (34) of Kottur, and P Balamurugan (38) of Senthilnagar.
The idols would be dispatched to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), he said.
In another case, a person was arrested in connection with a house burglary here. He was identified as R Raghu of Dindigul.

Two motorcycle mechanics have been accused of two- wheeler theft near Pallavaram and have been arrested by the police. Two bikes worth Rs one lakh have also been seized from them, reports said.
According to reports, Chandran (35) of Kalayanapuram lodged a complaint with the police stating his two- wheeler had gone missing on March 10. Based on the complaint, a police team conducted vehicle- check on Thursday and came across two suspicious-looking persons on a motorcycle.
When asked to stop, they sped past. The policemen chased them and caught the two. Enquiries with the detained Raghuram (18) and Ganapathy (16) of Alandur revealed that they had stolen the motorcycle from Pallavaram market. Based on their confession, one more bike was confiscated from their house.
Explosive materials seized two persons arrested in madurai

Explosive materials, including 100 gelatine sticks and 1,300 detonators, have been seized and two persons arrested in this connection in Virudhunagar district, police said here on Tuesday.


Police found the explosives in a van during a routine check Monday night.
Ten spark plugs and 800 kg of ammonium nitrate were also seized from the vehicle after the driver could not account for the explosives and the purpose for which they were being transported, they said.
Besides the driver, another person in the van was also arrested.
