Schooled in Tamil? Government job easier

jobs

The Tamil Nadu government will reserve 20 per cent seats to candidates educated under Tamil medium for direct recruitment in the state’s services, an ordina nce said on Tuesday.

In an extraordinary gazette, it said the decision was taken considering that Tamil- medium students got “very little chances” of jobs through the UPSC, in other state governments or in the private sector.

The government will soon bring in legislation on this, also given that a majority of schools and colleges in the state was using Tamil — one of the world’s most anc ient languages — as the educational medium.

The ordinance recalled that the June World Classical Tamil Conference did pass a resolution on such a preferential appointment. The prime objective was conducting the state administration with “transpare ncy in the vocal language of the masses” in “accordance with the provisions of the Constitution” and other laws of the land.

Newspaper in Education programme under way at School in the city

students

The ending for the stories were different. They did not come near the one in the typed copy carried by the resource person. Each group of students in Class VIII ‘D’ of Virudhunagar Hindu Nadar Higher Secondary School had something new to add to the original story. The Hindu-Newspaper in Education session on ‘Spin a yarn’ on Monday provided ample scope for the children to think differently.

The resource person, Y. Jothi, read out half the story and asked the children to come out with an ending by adding characters and situations. This exercise was done twice during the session (the stories of ‘Scared Hare’ and ‘Chottu and Curly Tail’ were read out) and on both occasions the students came out with brilliant conclusions — an ending and a moral.

In the case of both the stories, the plot line of the students, who were divided into four groups, contained harmony, triumph and other good things in life. There was no conflict or defeat in what they conceived as the remainder of the story. They also closely followed the original plot and came out with answers even before the resource person could complete her questions. One student had this moral for the Chottu story: “Do not be afraid of win or loss. Just compete.”

They were also asked about the situations which warranted “making up a story.” Coming late to school was one instance for which the “story” was “delay in arrival of autorickshaw.” The children also got to know about news stories published in newspapers. The session concluded with a student narrating the tale of a golden goose.

Many, many donated a good collection books on the ‘Wall’

Aviva Great Wall of Education

As parents we are often reluctant to sell the books our children used when they were young, but we also wish they could be put to some use subsequently. This book donation drive is an excellent way to help others.”

This observation by Sakina Bakir, a senior citizen, who donated a good collection of quiz books sports books and encyclopaedias, reflected the sentiment of many donors at the ‘Aviva Great Wall of Education’ presented by The Hindu, at the Express Avenue Mall, Royapettah, on Monday.

According to the organisers, as of Monday evening, nearly 30,000 books had been donated. The drive was inaugurated on Sunday.

The range of books is wide – from primary school books to yellow pages to fantasy novels and colouring books. On one hand, in a heart-warming gesture, a group consisting of three-year old children happily parted with their scrap books while on the other a contributor donated an entire series on the Indian wildlife.

Prema Daniel, an avid traveller, who has bought books from every country she had been to, donated 40 travel and picture books.

“I was always curious about the places I visited and learnt a lot from these books. I hope the children who get them benefit similarly,” she said.

For P. Aishwarya, a second year medical student, donating around 300 children’s magazines brought back the “special memories” each storybook held.

“I want the kids to build their memories with books,” she said.

Every contributor is being given a photograph of him or her placing the donated books on the wall.

A musical event and interactive activities to promote awareness on sharing knowledge were also part of the programme.

The special attraction of the event on Monday was the visit of actor Karthi who urged people to donate as many books as possible before September 9.

“We all have books at home, and it is pretty convenient to donate them,” he said. “An act like this will go a long way in spreading cheer to many under-privileged children,” he added.

Meanwhile, schools are doing their bit to remind students to bring their old books to school and drop them in the cartons placed for the purpose.

For the primary school children, the school diary is the best reminder to inform the parents about the initiative. Many other schools are making it a point to make an announcement in the school assembly as well as in the evening before the children leave.
