The 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) is going to be held in Colombo from June 3 to 5. The awards, first staged in 2000, are held outside India every year in an effort to increase the international profile of Bollywood films. This year Sri Lanka will host the top Indian movie stars for the annual ritual
11th International Indian Film Academy
Please note in Sri Lanka, Bollywood and Kollywood films are the biggest grosser. Now after the civil war has come to an end, Sri Lanka wants to cash in on the popularity of Indian films.

The glittering IIFA annual awards ceremony will be held in Colombo’s biggest sports stadium, which organisers say will be attended by 500 guests and watched by 600 million TV viewers in 110 nations. The three-day IIFA event will feature premieres, celebrity parties, fashion shows and a T20 cricket match.

Amitabh Bachchan, the brand ambassador for IIFA was in Colombo to kickstart and create a media awareness about the event. Bachchan was given a red carpet reception in Colombo with the Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa himself meeting him at his palatial Presidents House.

Meanwhile invitations have been sent to all top Tamil actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan and Vijay to take part in IIFA. But due to the sensitivity about the matter and the anti –Rajapaksa sentiments in Tamil Nadu, none of the stars have even bothered to reply.

Now, smaller stars from Kollywood are being wooed in a big way. The Tamil stars with huge following among Sri Lankan Tamils worldwide is unlikely ever to step into Colombo!

There are unconfirmed reports that Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, Hindi version will have its world premiere at the Colombo IIFA awards on June 4. Will Mani Ratnam himself go for the premiere, remains the million dollar question?
