IMA and dental colleges awareness about dental hygiene to the people:Poongothai

Indian Medical Association (IMA) and private medical and dental colleges should work together to bring an awareness about dental hygiene to the people, Tamilnadu Minister for Information Technology Dr Poongothai Aladi Aruna has said.

She said this during the inauguration of a Continuing Dental Education programme for General Dental Practitioners organised by Indian Dental Association at the Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital here Sunday.

Poongothai invited IMA and private medical and dental colleges to work together in the screening of school children programme.

Pointing out the importance of periodontics in the field on dentistry, (that relates to the care and treatment of gums) she further said, the fast paced lifestyles and changing food habits such as using fatty items, adding preservatives are the reason for the poor health of gums, bleeding and other dental complications.

Nearly 22 primary health centres in the State have been alloted a dentist to work for three days in a week and soon the programme would be extended to all the centres. Steps would also be taken to appoint a dentist in all the PHCs soon, she said.

She also said, despite the increase in the number of dental colleges and the population ratio per dentist, still around 50 per cent of the population in the State experience dental problems and diseases

Loyola World Alumni Congress 2010 meet tomorrow

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will inaugurate the programme, in which Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu N. Ram will participate. Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran will inaugurate a symposium on environment and education. The other events include a panel discussion on ‘Spirit of Loyola’, presentation of Achievers’ Award and launch of alumni website.

A resolution for the setting up of Loyola Chennai Alumni Foundation would also be passed during the occasion.

TN asks AICTE not to give nod for new engg colleges next academic year

Tamil Nadu has asked the All India Council for Technical Education not to its permission for starting new engineering colleges in the state for next academic year in order to improve quality of education and infrastructure in the existing institutions.

“Since we want the engineering colleges to concentrate on providing quality education and upgrading their existing facilities, we have urged AICTE not to give permission for opening new engineering colleges in the state for the next academic year”, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi told reporters here today.

There were 471 engineering colleges in the state now and counselling for admissions concluded yesterday, he said.

More than 1,65,000 applications were received for about 1,25,000 seats and over 1,11,000 students have joined for various courses after the counselling,

MGR Medical Univ issued provisional certificate of affiliation

The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University has issued provisional certificate of affiliation to the college run by DD Medical and Educational Trust for starting MBBS Degree Course for the academic year 2010-11 with an annual intake of 150 seats.

The trust received the certificate of affiliation after paying a sum of about Rs 1.46 crore towards affiliation fee, University Administrative Expenses Fee and security deposit, a release from the Trust here today said.

After the Tamil Nadu Government issued the Essentiality Certificate, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued letter of permission to the Trust after making inspections and satisfied with the infrastructure and teaching facilities in the college at Kunnavalam in Tiruvallur District.

With Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University issuing certificate of affiliation, the decks have been cleared for admission and students could apply and seek admission directly for MBBS course this year till the end of September, it said.

The University had granted the affiliation subject to as many as 30 conditions, which included the admission procedure enunciated by the Supreme Court should be followed and the admission procedure completed by September 30.

It said the DD Medical College and Hospital should furnish a budget for each year of study and a separate development budget which would cover the expenses for the fulfillment of the requirements prescribed in the entire course of study.

Govt announces in private schools in warned of stern action collects higher fees from students.

Tamil Nadu Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu today announced in the State assembly that the Justice Govindarajan Commission would finalise the fee structure in private schools in four or five days and warned of stern action if any school collects higher fees from students.

Replying to a call attention motion by members with regard to private schools collecting higher fees from the students, the minister said the Justice Govindrajan Commission, appointed by the state government to finalise the fee strucuture, had held detailed discussions with managements of the schools and would soon come out with its report.

He said after the constitution of the Commission, the state government had sent circulars to all private schools in November, directing them not to admit students, till the fee issue was settled.

However, most of the schools, expressing practical difficulties, suggested that they be allowed to admit students and collect the fees after the Commission finalised the strucutre.

Accordingly, schools were allowed to admit students, he said adding the Justice Govindarajan Commission had more than 15 sittings and finalised the fee strucutre. It would submit its report within four or five days.

There were 10,951 private schools in the state, of which 10,233 had given their suggestions on the fee structure, he said.

Mr Thennsarasu said once the government fixed the fee structure, all the schools would be required to follow the same.

The government would take legal action, if anyone collected more fee than the limit fixed by the government, he warned.

Bharathiar University will organise a free summer camp

The Department of Physical Education of Bharathiar University will organise a free summer camp for physically challenged students from May 10 to 25 at the university premises.

According to a university release, the camp will be held at the Sekhizhar Hostel and will be conducted free of cost. It will be residential for the boys. Those who are above 12 years of age are eligible to attend. Participants will be taught basketball, football, handball, volleyball, softball, ball badminton, cricket, tennis and gymnastics. They will also be trained in track and field events, yoga, music, aerobics, and martial arts.

Applications are available at the Department of Physical Education. Students should register before May 10.

Indian Science Congress 2011” Website has been launched

Arrangements for the 98th Indian Science Congress 2011 to be held at the SRM University here are in full swing as the ”Indian Science Congress 2011” Website has been launched.

The website (www.isc2011.in) was formally launched by the General President of the Indian Science Congress Association, Prof K C Pandey, in the presence of Vice-Chancellor, Prof P Sathyanarayanan, Directors and Senior Faculty Members of the SRM University.

The website presents several details of the Indian Science Congress Association and the 98th Indian Science Congress 2011.

The details also contain the plenary sessions of the Indian Science Congress 2011 that are being planned, a release from SRM said.

The focal theme of the India of the Indian Science Congress 2011 is ”Quality Education and Excellence in Scientific Research in Indian Universities”.

The focal areas of the Indian Science Congress 2011 include challenge of water resources management in the new millennium, Genetic engineering and biotechnology: application and human welfare, emerging trends in biomedical research and technology, Information technology for rural development, nanotechnology: perspectives and present prospects, climate change and global warming, climate change and food security and renewable and non-conventional energy, energy security, bio-fuels as energy among others.

Over 8,000 delegates from several Universities, different institutions and national laboratories across the country and abroad, including a few Nobel Laureates, will be participating in the Indian Science Congress 2011 during January 3-7, 2011.

SRM University is putting in all efforts and making necessary arrangements for the Indian Science Congress 2011, the largest scientific event in the country, the release said.

The Indian Science Congress is customarily inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India.

Submitting application forms for enrolling in the MSc

The last date for submitting application forms for enrolling in the MSc Cyber Forensics and Information Security course offered by the University of Madras is May 5.

The course, which is being introduced in the new academic year, will be offered by the university’s department of criminology, said a press release. The course, which is of two years duration (four semesters), will have a mix of classroom instructions and hands-on lab work.

The application form for the course can be purchased directly from the University of Madras or downloaded from the website www.unom.ac.in.

TNNPL on donated Rs 25 lakh for the Anna Library

The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNNPL) on Friday donated Rs 25 lakh for the construction of the Anna Centenary Anniversary Library building at Kotturpuram in Chennai.

According to a press release, the cheque was presented to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi by Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin on behalf of TNNPL .

Start teacher training institutes informed the Assembly:Thangam Thennarasu

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Friday informed the Assembly that only minority educational institutions could start
teacher training institutes as per an order from the National Council for Teacher Education.

Replying to a query by CPI legislator Rajkumar as to whether the State government would start a teacher training institute, the Minister said one such institute already started by the government could not function due to the rule.

“The National Council for Teacher Edcuation has the clear ruling ‘that only minority education institutions could start teacher training institutes. Hence a new teacher training institute will be started only after the rule is revoked,”
