Fifty armed reserve women police imparting of training on traffic sign

Fifty armed reserve women police constables were inducted into a task force constituted for better traffic management of congested stretches here on Thursday.
Traffic management training
City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu oversaw the imparting of training on traffic signs to them and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini was present on the occasion.

These personnel would be initially posted on Tiruchi Road which requires manual regulation of traffic because of the ongoing road widening works and also on the congested Sathyamangalam Road. The remaining personnel would be utilised for tackling traffic congestion in other places in the city.

Another batch of 50 women armed reserve constables would be given training in traffic signs and then inducted into the traffic management task force soon.

The personnel would be used for regulation of the flow of traffic and enforcement of road rules against those indulging in serious violations.

Such enforcement would have a desirable effect in ensuring a culture of compliance and road sense among motorists in the long run.

The 100-member traffic management task force with more than three months experience on the road would come in handy for handling the traffic during the World Classical Tamil meet, the Commissioner said.

The heat does not deter them as they have a harsher summer in their States

The city’s summer may be driving its residents to cooler tourist destinations but Chennai, during summer, draws tourists from all over the world for a combination of reasons.

Braving the summer, many tourists from other States come on heritage visits, pilgrimages and sightseeing. “Our tourists are predominantly from West Bengal, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The heat does not deter them as they have a harsher summer in their States. We also see a growing foreign inflow from the Middle East and southeast Asian countries,” says A. C. Mohandoss, Managing Director,

The Department of Tourism packages its strong points to lure the tourists. The government-maintained places such as Muttukadu, Mudaliarkuppam and Mamallapuram, which find a place in many tourists’ itinerary, are made tourist-friendly.

For adventure freaks, the Rain Drop Boat House, Mudaliarkuppam, offers a better bet this summer, with its recently introduced parasailing and water-skiing facilities. The water scooters at Muttukadu have been getting their share of patronage throughout the year. It is expected to see a rise this vacation. TTDC Mahabalipuram Beach Resort Complex has opened its bookings for summer and so has the Tourist Department’s Hotel Tamil Nadu located in other major cities.

The ECR destinations are linked by the TTDC Hop-on Hop-off coaches, which was a step towards making tour trips in the city a sophisticated affair.

Private players along the stretch, including VGP Universal Kingdom, Mayajaal, MGM Dizzee World and Dakshinachitra, on their part, pull a good number of tourists. While East Coast Road remains the main attraction, the Tourism Department is promoting lesser-known places in and around Chennai. Many weekend packages from Chennai have been introduced by the department. As a ripple effect, places such as Vellore, Kancheepuram and Puducherry have seen a jump in the tourist inflow, the department officials say.

The choice of many tourists, however, is the good old places in the city. For Rathna Ishwar, a native of Chennai who works in Delhi, visits to Chennai with her friends have always been scheduled for May. “Delhi’s summer is unbearable and we come down almost every other year to Chennai. Shopping has been the major draw for my friends,” she said.

“Shopping malls are picking up in the city like any other metro but what is characteristic of Chennai is its old-time shopping places.”.

DMK’s tie-up with Cong for national integrity and harmony

Seeking the Centre’s “hand of friendship” in solving inter-state water disputes, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi has said his party’s alliance with Congress was for national integrity and harmony.
dmk_logohand1
“The Centre should extend to us a hand of friendship considering our situation (in the Mullaperiyar). We are asking the hand not just for elections or solving inter-state water disputes like Mullaperiyar (with Kerala) and Cauvery (with Karnataka) but for national integrity and harmony,” he said in his address at the DMK’s general council here yesterday.

DMK headquarters today released excerpts of Karunanidhi’s address to the council, where he said the Centre and other states must realise that the “handshake” with Centre was being asked in the interest of the nation. “I hope they realise.”

In his interaction with reporters after the general council meeting, Karunanidhi had sought Centre’s intervention in inter-state water disputes in order to maintain national integrity and sovereignty.

Even on Mullaperiyar issue, the state was resorting to legal recourse to uphold its rights and therefore “we are not enemies of the country’s sovereignty and integrity,” he told the General Council.

He said a day will come when those opposed to the welfare of Tamil Nadu will be exposed.

Charging Kerala with conspiring to push the farmers of the state into poverty and people into starvation, Karunanidhi said DMK’s opposition to participate in the Supreme Court constituted committee was against this “conspiracy”.

Asking his partymen to take out this message to the people across the state, he, however, cautioned against any attack on people of Kerala or their interests in the process.

Chiding Kerala for amending a legislation aimed at bypassing the February 2006 Supreme Court order allowing Tamil Nadu to increase the water storage level at Mullaperiar from 136 to 142 ft, Karunanidhi said Tamil Nadu went through the legal route when its neighbour moved the apex court against it.

However, the court did not rule either in favour or against the legislation (so far), he said, adding “we are not against the court.”

On the Sethusamudram issue, entangled in a legal battle with those opposed to the demolition of Ram Sethu, he said the Centre was being “intimidated” in the name of Lord Ram.

While the DMK understood the Centre’s predicament, it would not hesitate to raise its voice if the situation warranted,

Women’s International Film Festival in Chennai between 28 February and 9 March

Rathi Jafer, director, InKo Centre, Chennai, at a press meet to announce the 3rd Samsung Women’s International Film Festival in Chennai on Thursday. Film critic Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan, Goethe Institute director Karl Pechatscheek and Samsung general manager Ruchika Batra are also seen.
Women’s International Film Festival
Giving a fitting homage to women folk around the world, InKo Center, Chennai, along with Samsung Electronics, is organising the third edition of Women’s International Film Festival in Chennai between 28 February and 9 March.

‘Started two years ago, the Women’s International Film Festival has become a powerful platform to give women’s perspectives under one umbrella.

We are trying to bring in a new critical vocabulary about women’s films here,’ Rathi Jafer, director, InKo Center, said at a press meet here on Thursday.

‘A total of 175 films from 53 countries will be screened over nine days across two screens. The festival will cover 75 years of women cinema presenting films from 1935 to 2010. The opening film will be Firaq by Nandita Das,’ she added.

‘One unique thing about this international film festival is that it is focused and gender-based. Not the theme, but gender becomes a subject of matter of these films,’ said Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan, film critic and festival curator.

‘Using the form of cinema we think we can build a platform to associate with the people. This festival is part of the Samsung Hope Project, the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative,’ Ruchika Batra, general manager, Samsung, said.

The third Samsung Women’s International Film Festival would give voice and expression to the perspective of women and celebrates her spirit using the medium of cinema.

The film festival will include a strong Korean and Indian section of feature films, short films and documentaries as well as a section on World Cinema in all three categories.

Films are scheduled to be screened at Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall and the South India Film Chamber.

The third edition of this festival also aim to showcase the work of talented Chennai-based film makers who have made a significant contribution to Tamil Cinema in particular and to Indian Cinema more generally.

Over one week film-makers, festival curators and film studies specialists both national and international will visit Chennai to introduce their films and to interact with the audience.

The delegate passes are priced at Rs 200 for the general public, Rs 150 for members of film societies and Rs 100 for students.

Congress has run into trouble with its allies. In Tamil Nadu

The Congress has run into trouble with its allies. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is unhappy about a meeting between Congress President Sonia Gandhi and AIADMK chief Jayalalitha even as cracks have appeared in Jammu and Kashmir between the Congress and National Conference over the newly proposed surrender policy for militants over in PoK.

Down south the DMK has expressed disappointment over rival AIADMK chief Jayalalitha’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi at an Election Commission function last week.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi indirectly expressed his displeasure at the interaction by clamming the Chief Election Commissioner for facilitating the meeting, and written about the issue in the party mouth piece ‘Murasoli’ saying that CEC Navin Chawla had shown ‘undue interest’ in inviting Jayalalithaa to the silver jubilee celebrations of the Election Commission held at Delhi last week and also arranging the cordial chat between the two powerful women politicians. The chat seemed no more than a brief exchange of pleasantries last week, but once which has made the DMK chief an unhappy man.

In fact citing comments earlier made by PMK leader Ramadoss, Karunanidhi has said, “If those vested with the responsibility to be truthful and protect democracy acted in a partisan manner, one is compelled to raise the question whether the fence itself is feeding on the crop

He has also hit out at the CEC for postponing a assembly by-election at the behest of a request made by Jayalalitha.

Karunanidhi, being a shrewd politician, stopped short of raising a direct finger at the Congress President, but the accusation is implicit and one that will no doubt be taken note of.

Though both the DMK and Congress leaders had insisted soon after the meeting that there was nothing much to it, it is now clear that the DMK is indeed jittery. The reasons for the insecurity are many; With the assembly elections fast approaching, any overtures made by Jayalalitha are bound to upset Karunanidhi’s apple cart. Moreover, the DMK believes that Rahul Gandhi is not too favorable about the alliance and there is much friction with the state Congress leaders.

Political analysts believe that with this statement targeting the CEC, the DMK chief has given subtle hints to the Congress- that even a casual ‘Hello’ to Amma is unwelcome.

Meanwhile, a war of words has broken out between allies the National Conference and the Congress in the Kashmir valley, with former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad taking on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his proposed surrender policy, which if passed would facilitate the return of almost 11,000 Kashmiri men trained in militant camps in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

The Union Health Minister Azad has lashed out saying that there is no guarantee that the youth after surrendering will not re-engage in terrorist activities. In stark contrast, Abdullah has said that the new policy will help bring back home young people in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir who are willing to return to the mainstream, adding that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that they are rehabilitated.
