Chellapandian’s statue at Vannerpet here was removed in Tirunelveli

Former Speaker Chellapandian’s statue at Vannerpet here was removed on Tuesday to facilitate the early completion of the overbridge being constructed at this busy junction at the cost of over Rs. 16 crore.
Chellapandian statue
Since vehicular traffic at Chellapandian traffic island at Vannarpet here is very high at any given time, the State Government sanctioned the construction of an overbridge at this junction at a cost of over Rs. 16 crore following a representation from Mayor A.L. Subramanian.

Though the number of vehicles passing through this point from east to west or vice-versa is very high, it was decided to construct the overbridge in the north-south direction since any move to build the concrete structure in east-west direction might have triggered a series of litigation against land acquisition. Even after construction of the overbridge reached the final stage, the statue, which was unveiled on April 20, 1995, was not removed to facilitate the ongoing construction.

Following the sustained efforts made by Collector M. Jayaraman, experts from the Department of Highways and Archaeology inspected the statue and checked its strength and the pedestal on which the life-size statue is standing.

Based on the report submitted by the team, it was decided to remove the statue and keep it safely in the Government Museum near the District Police Office till the construction is over. Subsequently, work on removing the statue commenced.

“Once construction of the overbridge is completed, the statue will be reinstalled there,

windmill
Inaugurating a wind mill at Aduthurai railway station near here yesterday, set up by the Coimbatore-based Viviann Wind generators, Mr Kishan said, ”Wind energy is god gift and we have to utilise it.” Stating that the wind powered unreserved ticketing system has been introduced in Aduthurai railway station, he said power generated from the wind mill would run the UPS, provide skeletal lighting at the station and help signal operations.

Speaking on the occassion, B K Shivakumar, Chairman of Vivian Electric, said a wind energy generator of 2 KW capacity has been erected atop a 20-metre tall tower.

The wind data of Aduthurai was encouraging. If the wind speed was above 3m/sec, it starts generating AC voltage with a variable frequency which is rectified to DC voltage and then inverted to 230 V single phase 50 Hz, he said.

Managing Director of the Company Vimal Arockyaraj Vincent said the company has provided hybrid street light to rain drop boat house at Mudaliarkuppam, off East Coast Road, near Chennai.

Railway officials said it has been proposed to provide One KW capacity solar power supply system at TPTN station in Tiruchirapalli to supply power to the lighting circuits of station building.

They also said a solar system has been provided for operation of ticket checking system at Thirunageswaram railway station.

The officials said many of the railway stations in Tiruchirapalli division falling under the rural distribution network of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board(TNEB) were facing power cuts and to overcome this one 500 VA capacity solar system-based inverter has been provided to cater power requirement of UPS during power shut down.

Group of Prisoners went on the rampage damaging bulbs in the cells and clashed

A group of prisoners went on the rampage damaging bulbs in the cells and clashed with each other leaving eight injured in the high-security Palayamkottai Central Prison, here last night.

Police sources said the prison authorities and the police conducted surprise checks in the cells, housing undertrials and convicts, following complaints that the inmates were using mobile phones stealthily inside the prison complex.

Objecting to the search, notorious gangster D Azhagar (35) alias Valarntha Azhagar, who is undergoing life imprisonment in connection with the sensational murder of former DMK Minister Aladi Aruna, indulged in wordy duel with the officials and at one stage damaged the bulb in his cell and attempted to manhandle the officials.

His associates, lodged in separate cells in the block, also went on rampage attacking the other inmates. Eight prisoners, who suffered minor injuries in the incident, were treated at the prison hospital.

Though the situation was under control, Azhagar and his associates refused to take breakfast this morning as a mark of protest over the search in their cells.

The Principal Sessions Court, Tirunelveli, had awarded death sentence to Azhagar and his associate P Balamurugan (34) on April 18, 2008, for murdering Aladi Aruna and his friend R Ponraj in 2004.

S A Raja, a key accused in the case and Chairman of Rajas Group of Educational Institutions, was acquitted.

However, on August 5, 2009, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence awarded by the trial court on an appeal by Azhagar, who prayed for quashing of the death sentence awarded to him in the case.

In Tamil Nadu temple, Dalits allowed to offer prayers

Three years after deep caste divisions stopped them from celebrating a temple festival together, on Friday dalits beat the drums as per tradition and Thevars led the procession to an ancient temple.

The rare show of caste amity took place in Pillaiyarpuram village, in caste-sensitive Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, where the villagers worshipped together at the Vadabathira Kaliamman temple.

Tirunelveli SP Asra Garg led a posse of 600 policemen to provide security backup in the village. He said the festival was held after marathon talks were held on Friday to convince the Thevars to allow the dalits to take part in the ritualistic tradition of drumbeating after which they were allowed to offer prayers at the temple. The village dalit leader, S Gurusamy, told TOI: “We will be happy if this continues.” The silk clothes offered by the dalits were used to adorn the deity.

Though the non-dalits from eight villages enjoyed the rights of conducting ceremonies in this temple during the annual festival during March every year, the dalits also participated in it and were the drumbeaters.

There was harmony until 2007 when a minor dispute led to a clash and strains developed between the two groups — a case is pending in this regard in the Madras HC. The revenue department and police held a peace meeting and it was decided that the festival would be held on March 5 and 6.

The non-dalits were allowed to enter the temple and perform the ceremonies, while the dalits entered the temple and offered prayers.
