Sea cow, an endangered marine species

A sea cow, an endangered marine species, was washed ashore near the Rameswaram Fishing Jetty, this morning.

The carcass, weighing about 800 kg and ten-foot long and bearing stomach injuries, was found by the fishermen who in turn informed the authorities of Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, here.

The authorities said after conducting a post-mortem, the carcass would be buried later in the day.

According to the officials of Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, sea cow is the largest aquatic species existing between India and Sri Lanka in the Gulf of Mannar and in Palk Bay, where abundant pastures of sea grass meadows grow in the shallow waters, providing food.

Sea cow population also exists in Gulf of Kutch and Andaman Islands in Indian waters. But, they are facing the danger of extinction from hunting for food and their skins and also for their valuable subcutaneous fat, which is used not only as a butter substitute but also for oil lamps, as it does not give off any smoke or odour and can be kept for a long time in warm weather without perishing.
