Describing Sri Jayendra Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi, as a “great son of the soil”, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today asked him to guide the country towards the “right path”.

“His holiness is among the greatest sons of India. He has spent his entire life for the sake of humanity. I appeal to him to guide the country so that people are on the right path,” Chatterjee said while accepting the Sri Chandrasekharandra Saraswati National Eminence Award.
Saying the country was “losing direction”, Chatterjee, who was expelled from the CPI(M) last year added, “I often wonder where the country is going. Even after 60 years of Independence we hear of farmers’ suicides. This is a national shame.”
Chatterjee, who received Rs 2.50 lakh as part of the award, said he would utilise it to set up a girl’s college in his former constituency Bolpur

On February 19, the Judicial Magistrate Court-I, Kancheepuram, granted bail to Devanathan as the police failed to file the chargesheet within the mandatory period of 90 days. A bail petition was moved on behalf of Devanathan and conditional bail was granted.
Goa governor lauds Kanchi university system

Governor of Goa, Dr Shivinder Singh Sidhu, was all praise for the Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya (SCSVMV) because the deemed university “has adopted a unique system wherein the departments of Sanskrit and Indian Culture act as the fulcrum around which all other faculties and inter-disciplinary centers gravitate.”

Handing out endowment to select 10 meritorious students who won gold medals in various disciplines ranging from Sanskrit to human resource, the chief guest at the 13th convocation on Sunday quoted Julius R Oppenheimer, “what we shall find in modern Physics is an exemplification, an encouragement and a refinement of old Hindu wisdom.” Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi watched the proceedings sitting on a separate podium and offered the holy `vibuthi’ as the students filed past to receive their honors.
Delivering the convocation address, the governor appreciated the university for taking special steps to protect certain forms of traditional knowledge like shilpa (the art of making idols and icons) and Agama Sastra (the art of performing procedural rites in temples and the science of managing them).
Jayendra Saraswathi, in his Anugraha Bhashanam, first in Hindi and then in Tamil, said it was a unique moment because Sidhu, a follower of Guru Nanak, was delivering the convocation address of the university named after Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswamiji.
Earlier, Chancellor Prof Dr S Venkateswaran administered the convocation pledge. Out of 963 graduating students, only 723 received the degrees and diplomas in person.
Wanted criminal Encounter with the patrol police
In a pre-dawn ‘chance encounter’ with the patrol police at Padunelli checkpoint on Kancheepuram-Arakkonam highway, a wanted criminal, Natarajan (27) , was bumped off.

Kanchi taluk inspector Sampath, who sustained injuries on his right leg in a petrol bomb attack, told Express from his hospital bed, “I had to shoot him to kill, or else I would have been finished.” DSP K. Rajendran said the Padunelli check point was sensitive and strategic for smuggling and the non-functioning point was recently made operational following orders from SP Prem Anand Sinha.
Sampat’s version was that he along with sub-inspector Gokulraj and constables Palani, Ramesh and Subramani was doing a routine check, when Natrajan sped past in a motorbike without stopping at the check point. However, Sampath gave a hot chase in his jeep and caught the criminal.
The history sheeter hurled a petrol bomb at the police party after lighting it by a cigar lighter. After hurling one more bomb, he swished out a sickle and advanced towards the inspector. “At this point, I fired four rounds from my pistol, but I am still recovering from the shock,” the inspector said. Sampat had taken over as the Kanchi Taluk inspector just a month ago, and it was his first encounter that resulted in a killing.
DIG M Ramasubramani cautioned that the police act should not be misconstrued as a ‘police encounter’ in the sense it was normally understood, but “it just happened,” a point that was instantly endorsed by Tiruvallur SP V Vanitha, who was officiating in the absence of Kanchi SP Sinha. Ramasubramani said Natarajan hailed from Illuppappattu in Nagappattinam district, and he had served twoand- a-half years’ imprisonment in a murder case. There were four murder cases, (three registered at Mayiladurai and one at Manalmedu), five attempt to murder cases and one under the Narcotics Act filed against him.
Meanwhile, Bamavathi (58), mother of the deceased and Gopinath (30), Natarajan’s elder brother, put the entire blame for the ‘brutal murder’ on Kancheepuram police, and their lawyer initially refused to accept the body saying, “Unless the encounter cop and his associates were booked under Section 302, and a copy of the FIR served to the family”, the body would not be received by the family.
Even Revenue Divisional Officer Palani’s assurance that a videotape of the post-mortem of Natarajan would be provided to the family could not pacify them.
Natarajan’s father Subbarayan (62), sister Vanaja (26) and brother Gopinath alleged that he was a victim of a premeditated murder by the police.
SP Sinha, who cut short his leave and returned to Kancheepuram in the evening, said that Natrajan’s family was to be blamed for the entire episode as they used to bail him out after each of his criminal activity.
What happened was destined to happen and the policemen just acted in selfdefence,

Participating in the inauguration of the plant of Renault Nissan Alliance at Renault Nissan Alliance near here, Mr. Stalin, also handling the portfolio of industries, said according to the Automotive Mission Plan 2006-2016 document, the country was set to emerge as the destination for design and manufacture of automobiles, and auto components, with the output reaching a level of $ 145 billion and providing additional employment to 25 million people by 2016. “Our government is committed to capitalise on this opportunity and attract a major share of investment flows,” he said, unveiling a plaque to mark the inauguration of the plant.
Later, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi pressed a button to open the assembly line of the plant and the roll out of ‘Micra’ cars.
Chennai houses seven automobile majors

Mr. Karunanidhi said with the establishment of the Renault-Nissan car project, Chennai had become the home of seven automobile majors out of top 20 global automobile manufacturers. The other automobile majors located in Tamil Nadu were Daimler, Ford, BMW, Hyundai and Mitsubishi.
Though Chennai has become the country’s largest automobile hub, Chennai was lacking the vehicle testing facilities. Therefore, automobile manufacturers had to send their vehicles to Pune for testing and certification. On the State government’s initiative, the Union government was implementing the National Automotive Testing Research and Development Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) in Oragadam at a cost of about Rs. 450 crore. The State government had given 304 of land to this project. This project was aimed at facilitating the introduction of world class automotive safety, emission and performance standards in India and ensuring seamless integration of our automotive industry with the global industry.
Nissan unit ready
Tracing the history of the project, Mr. Stalin said after a memorandum of understanding was signed in February 2008, the Nissan unit was now ready. “Renault will also establish its car project, as envisaged in the MoU,” he expressed the hope. [The project envisaged separate manufacturing lines for the partners].
Once both Reanult and Nissan plants were established, their total annual installed capacity for the production of cars would be four lakh, and the total investment would be Rs. 4,500 crore, providing employment to about 10,500 persons directly, and another 31,000 indirectly, the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Yoshiro Mori, Chairman of Japan-India Association and former Japanese Prime Minister, explained how the relationship between the two countries developed since his visit to India in 2000 in the capacity of Prime Minister. The number of Japanese companies established in and around Chennai was at 170 from 65 three years ago.
Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, said the manufacturing system combined the best practices of the two companies. He also reiterated his organisation’s commitment to fuel efficiency and other quality parameters.
Akira Sakurai, Managing Director of Renault Nissan Automobile India and Marc Nassif, deputy managing director of the company, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
