Spurious fertiliser and pesticides manufacturing unit sealed

A spurious fertiliser and pesticides manufacturing unit at Kavindapady near here has been sealed by Agriculture department officials.

This followed complaints from farmers that fertiliser purchased from the unit had damaged their turmeric crop. The farmers had also resorted to a road-roko here last week in this regard.

Department officials said a raid on the unit revealed that the ‘fertiliser’ was being packed and put in bags with the labels of popular fertiliser companies. These were then sold in the market.

A search was on for the owner of the unit while his wife and a saleswoman were arrested,

Faction feud may mar DMK meet in Erode

Faction feud in the DMK is likely to come to the fore at the cadre meeting to be held here on Saturday with the party wing being divided into two – those supporting expelled former minister N K K P Raja and those opposing him.

After his expulsion last year, his father and former minister N K K Periyasamy, who was appointed as party district in-charge in place of Raja, had held a similar meeting where he warned cadre with drastic action if they support expelled leaders.

In no district, deputy incharge post was created. But, S L T P Sachidanandam’s appointment to that post only brought out the simmering differences within the party.

His supporters were seen erecting banners carrying his picture in big size in the name of World Classical Tamil meet, while ‘playing down’ Periyasamy.

They also invited Sachidanandam and Erode Mayor Kumarmurugesh to attend some functions, including May Day celebration, while their opponents invited Periyasamy and Raja. One step ahead, Radharukmani, a councillor of Veerappanchathram municipality, openly complained to the CM and the Deputy CM against Raja.

According to Periyasamy, the meet will discuss steps to be taken to strengthen party at the grassroot level, world Tamil meet and CM’s birthday celebration on June 3.

But, opponents of him planned to rake up Raja’s presence with dhotis, bordered with party flag in some functions, at the meeting.

Meanwhile, according to some insiders who prefer anonymity, though Periyasamy initially welcomed action against Raja following land grabbing and kidnapping cases, of late, he is advocating the need to forgive.

“The esteem of the party is vital. Assembly poll is also nearing. Hence, we are keen to protect the party’s interest at first,”

40,000 power looms in different parts of Erode district resumed

The production in over 40,000 power looms in different parts of Erode district resumed on Monday as the owners of the units called off their strike.
power looms
Powerloom owners in Veerappan Chatram and a few other parts in the district went on an indefinite on April 26 protesting against the raising cotton yarn prices and unannounced power cuts.

A large number of weavers who depend on the powerloom sector for their income were rendered jobless following the strike.

The weaving sector, the second largest employer in the district, was severely affected due to the sharp increase in the cotton yarn prices.

The units were not able to accept new orders as the prices of the yarn continued to rise despite the Government announcing various measures, including the removal of incentive given for cotton yarn exports.

There was an increase of 50 per cent to 60 per cent in the cotton yarn prices since last year.

What added to their woes were the unannounced power cuts.

Instead of the three-hour load shedding the district experiences power cuts from five to six hours in a day.

As many weavers were rendered jobless, their families found it very hard to cope with the situation.

“We have decided to call off the strike considering the difficulties faced by the families of the weavers,” Veerappan Chatram Power Loom Owners Association Secretary M. Annathurai

A farmer, Kandasamy lodged a complaint against Erode MLA raja

A farmer, Kandasamy, 47, and his wife Padmini lodged a complaint against Erode MLA and former minister N K K P Raja at Veerappanchathram police station here on Sunday.

Kandasamy, who came with some of his neighbours, told news persons waiting outside the police station that he and his father Karupanna Goundar had taken on lease a 9.69- acre land at Pichakattukarai, ward-1 of Periyasemur municipality, from the landowner E K M A Sali Abi of BP Agraharam.

“We have been staying there in a house for the past eight decades. When Raja became a minister in 2006, six of his associates bought the land from the lady. They did allow me to buy 93.6 cents at a cost of Rs 10.5 lakh but nine months back, forced me to sell 43.6 cents to another person. However, I did not get any money for that,” he alleged.

“The area was developed as a housing plot and stones were laid in the name of a real estate firm. Saturday afternoon, Raja, along with 10 persons, came to my house in a car and asked my wife where I had gone. My son Saravanan gave him my cell phone number.

Raja then talked to me through cell phone for six minutes and asked me to meet him with records for his piece of land within two days,” Kandasamy said.
