CUMBUM:
The Mullaiperiyar dam issue will be settled without losing the rights of Tamil Nadu over it. The Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will solve this issue without any adverse effect on the relationship between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, said N. Ramakrishnan, Cumbum MLA.
Talking to media persons after receiving declaration letter from the Returning Officer A. Saravana Vel Raj at Uthamapalayam here on Friday, he said that the state government would take quick steps in this connection.
Reacting to a land sliding victory in the byelection, Mr. Ramakrishnan said poll strategies of Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Azhagiri, powerful and vigorous election campaign by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other Ministers and leaders of the Congress, dedicated hard work by cadres of DMK and overwhelming support of people were the main keys for this grand success, he added. “Trust of the people in me is proved again.”
To a question on a big margin, he stated that several good schemes of the government encouraged voters to extend this overwhelming support to the government. Later, the MLA toured the constituency in an open jeep to thank the voters. Party men and district level functionaries accompanied him.
Uthamapalalayam and Cumbum towns wore a festive look in the evening. The DMK cadres celebrated the victory by distributing sweets to the public in Theni, Cumbum and Uthamapalayam and bursting crackers before the counting centre.
The DMK maintained its supremacy since first round. In subsequent rounds, it was well ahead of his DMDK rival who got just 25 per cent of total votes gained by the DMK.
This lead was maintained till the 13th and final round. The DMDK equalled the votes it gained in the 2006 Assembly election in the eighth round itself. Returning Officer for Cumbum constituency A. Saravana Vel Raj, Collector P. Muthuveeran, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan and three election observers inspected the counting.

(The district administration had stated that the EPIC was issued to all voters in the constituency).
The District Election Office declared that 57 voters had opted for rule 49-O.
Presiding officers in most of the polling stations stated that not a single voter refused to cast his or her vote in their stations on Tuesday.
Vijaykant criticises DMK candidate
CUMBUM: Voters should not sell their votes for money. The DMK is depending on its money and muscle power to win the election.
Such a belief should be shattered in this mid-term poll.
People should show it that they could not be bought under any circumstances, said the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijaykant.
The DMDK leader kick started his second day of election campaign at Ramasamynaickenpatti near here on Monday.
Showing a pair of dhotis and saris, Mr. Vijaykant questioned: “Will this poor quality dhoti and sari worth roughly Rs.100 solve all your problems? Will it slashes prices of essential commodities or solve unemployment problems or provide better education to your wards at affordable costs. Nothing will happen.”
Hitting hard on DMK candidate, Mr. Vijaykant said Mr. Ramakrishnan too did not respect voters. Hard work of the AIADMK and the MDMK in the general Assembly election was in vain. He resigned his MLA post for his personal benefits.
Braving torrential showers, Mr. Vijaykant campaigned for his candidate R. Arun Kumar at Kamaya Goundenpatti. The crowd remained in tact till he finished his speech. Crowd was impressive at all villages.
