Local chapter of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has asked the Centre to have a relook at export of certain raw materials like cotton and iron ore, which led to loss of foreign exchange, as India was importing the finished products of the same materials at a higher rate.
In a resolution adopted at the 76th Annual General meeting, the chamber said raw material prices also, including prices of oil and oil products, were on the rise, which had adversely affected exporters. A relook was essential and suitable policy initiatives had to be taken in this regard, the chamber said.
Requesting the government to look at increasing the duty drawback and Duty Entitlement Pass Book rates, it sought exempting the exporters from payment of service tax, instead of refunding it to them.
On Goods and Service Tax, the chamber sought exemption of goods from Central GST those already exempted from the State GST, it said, adding natural gas, petroleum products (Crude, motor spirit, ATF and HSD) and alcoholic beverages and real estate should be included in GST.

HIV-TB co-infection is increasing in the western districts
Posted by ganesh in Coimbatore, Departments, Health, Information, Public, disease, hospital, illegal on August 19th, 2010

The incidence of HIV-TB co-infection is increasing in the western districts of Namakkal, Salem, Coimbatore and Erode and must be addressed immediately, V.K.Subburaj, Principal Secretary, Health, said.
The incidence was over 24 per cent in Karur, while globally, 15 per cent of people with HIV develop tuberculosis, he added. The government was trying to address this by increasing the special attention paid to these districts. The reason Tamil Nadu has not made significant progress in addressing TB-HIV is because it has not been integrated into the public health system. He was speaking at the launch of the Global Fund Round 9 programme for civil society engagement organised in the city by REACH on Wednesday.
The State will also consider a proposal to introduce a multi-sectoral approach within various health departments to address the issues posed by TB, its detection, treatment, cure and resistant strains. At the local level, the health inspectors have been instructed to be involved with and take responsibility for all diseases that occur at the village level.
Another problem is that the TB control units are small and suffer from manpower shortage. The government is trying to address that as well, by posting qualified personnel in the labs and PHCs.
Mr. Subburaj stressed that emphasis must be given on the need to stick through the course of the drug regimen, in order to avoid drug-resistant TB. What would be a six-month treatment period gets extended to two years, with more complications if drug resistance develops, he added.
Rajesh Lakhoni, Chennai Corporation Commissioner, said the tendency among persons detected with TB to go into denial first, leads to delay in taking up treatment. P.Kuganantham, Health Officer, Chennai Corporation, said the civic body intends to mainstream HIV and TB detection and treatment activities.
C.Udayshankar, State TB Officer said, the government is planning to start a 24-hour helpline for TB support in the State.
Nevin Wilson, Director, The Union – South East Asia, said the aim of the Global Fund Round 9 was to engage communities and community-based care providers to improve TB care and control. Sr. Anbarasi, representative of CHAI, and Vijay Edwards of World Vision also spoke.

Launching Garuda Paddy Power Weeder for commercialisation or incubation

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has developed 746 crop varieties and 146 farm equipment. But, unless these reach the farmers, they cannot be put to good use. Since the university cannot commercialise the technologies and designs, private companies and entrepreneurs should come forward to do so, Vice-Chancellor of the university P. Murugesa Boopathi said here recently.

POWER WEEDER
Launching the Garuda Paddy Power Weeder for commercial use, the Vice-Chancellor said the Agri-Business Development Directorate had been set up in the university to act as a link between the university and entrepreneurs to facilitate commercialisation or incubation.
EQUIPMENT COST
The power weeder design had been transferred by the university to Premier Power Equipment and Products Private Limited for commercial manufacture.
The cost of the weeder was fixed at Rs. 31,000.
This was in response to the demand by rice farmers to replace the manual weeder as it was found difficult to be pushed in between the rows of paddy.
SUBSIDY
“There is a possibility of getting 50 per cent subsidy for the purchase of the weeder from the Department of Agriculture Engineering, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Corporation Bank has also come forward to extend loans for the same purpose,” Mr. Boopathi said.
Lamenting that most of the wards of farmers were moving away from farming, the Vice-Chancellor said mechanisation was the only solution for addressing this and also labour scarcity.
“There are 80 lakh farming families in Tamil Nadu. Out of these, 65 lakh are small and marginal farmers possessing very small holdings. Hence, scientists should design and develop machinery that can be used in such small holdings,” he said. Appreciating the equipment that had been developed for sugarcane harvesting, Mr. Boopathi said efficient mechanisation was necessary in cotton, especially for picking.
COCONUT TREE CLIMBER
The next major equipment that was awaiting commercialisation was the coconut tree climber, he added.
Registrar P. Subbian, Dean S. Santhanu Bosu, Director of Research M. Paramathma, Director of Agri Business Development R. Ganeshan, and Chief Executive Officer and Director of Premier Equipment and Products Private Limited A. Rajkumar, were present for the launch.
