77 People were Injured in the traditional Bullfight ‘Jallikattu’
Around 77 people were injured in the traditional bullfight ‘Jallikattu’ that was organised at Thirumanur village in Ariyalur district.

Jallikattu is India’s version of running of the bulls that takes place every year in the Spanish city of Pamplona.
In Jallikattu, well fed and groomed bulls, often pepped up with considerable doses of toddy or country liquor known as arrack are brought to the main street in the village.
These bulls are then coaxed to dash, while a selected lot of men chase it and try to cow down the bulls by gripping their horns with all might.
Unlike the Spanish version of the sport, the aim is not to kill the bulls but to dominate and tame them, and pluck away bundles of money or other treats tied to their specially sharpened horns.
According to locals, it is an individual as well collective test of skills.
Murugasan, a participant said, “It is Tamilian heritage. Jallikattu is a sport, one that reflects bravery and also an individual’s skills in taming the bull. Indeed, it is a risky venture.”
The Supreme Court had earlier in 2007 banned Jallikattu by contending it was cruel and not in keeping with what it described as the country’s non-violent traditions.
But the apex court lifted the ban on the game in 2008 saying the popular sport should be held under strict government vigil.
This annual festival attracts scores of tourists, who come here to enjoy the test of skills.
Tamilians regard Jallikattu as their heritage and the farmers thanks-giving ceremony known as Masi Maha to the livestock.
More than 500 bulls from Tanjore, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Thiruchanapalli, Karur and Perambalur took part in the Jallikattu of Ariyalur this year.

Thousands flocked to Keelakolathur village in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur District to watch the popular ‘Jallikattu’, a traditional sport in which individuals try to hold onto enraged Bulls for certain distance.

Young men displayed courage and talent on the occasion of Thai Pusam, a local festival.
The event was appreciated by one and all for the thrills and adventure it provided to the spectators.
“Over 500 bulls were brought from various districts and around 100 men participated in this event. The participants showcased their skills and talent in this sport. This is one of the best show organised with the support of the government. And I request them to cooperate with the locals keeping the sport alive,” said Amraramoorthy, a state deputy. “The arrangement for the events was good. I have been watching this event for the last 20 years, but this year the arrangements were far better than the last year,” said Sumathi, an enthusiast.
This year, the event was held as per new Supreme Court guidelines.
The apex court has banned the ‘Jallikattu’ citing cruelty to animals as the main reason. But later the court granted a conditional permission for the event. It stated a set of compulsory guidelines, which the organisers have to follow strictly during ‘Jallikattu’ as certain objectionable practices have been in fashion in the recent past to enrage the bull.
During this traditional ’sport’, the horns of the adorned bulls are made wet before the event and the animal is rubbed down with oil, making it more difficult to hold onto. To add to it the bulls are drugged with steroids and are sometimes made to drink alcohol in order to enrage them. (ANI)
3 Temples in Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts world heritage monuments by the UNESCO
Posted by ganesh in Ariyalur, Communication, Culture, Departments, Information, Others, Temples, Thanjavur, government, programme on January 21st, 2010
Three temples in Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts, namely the Brihadisvara temple, Iravateswarawamy temple and the Big temple at Gangaikondacholapuram built by the great Chola kings have been declared as world heritage monuments by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur built by Raja Raja Cholan is celebrating its millenium this year; the Iravateswarawamy temple at Darasuram near Kumbkonam was built by Raja Raja II and the Big temple at Gangaikondacholapuram was built by Rajendran Cholan, son of Raja Raja Cholan in Ariyalur district.
The three temples are in stone and have almost same architecture and design except for the size. While the Big Temple at Thanjavur remains colossal in all its aspects — a towering Vimana with a height of 212 ft, a big Linga in the sanctum sanctorum, a huge Nandi in the front and Goddess Periyanayaki also standing tall, Darasuram and Gangaikondacholapuram account for smaller forms of the Big temple. Despite the general concept of a chariot being pulled, the sculptures differ in the three temples.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maintains the three temples well and has almost reconstructed the whole temple at Darasuram.
The construction of the Big Temple — also known as Rajarajeswaran Udaiyar after the great king — began in 1003A.D. and was consecrated for worship on 275th day of the 25th year of the King’s reign (1010 A.D.). The temple is 1000 years old this year (2010). This edifice is one of the finest and most exquisite specimens of the Chola architecture. Dedicated to Lord Siva, it is located within a spacious inner courtyard measuring 240 X120 m. The temple is replete with inscriptions relating to its origin and endowments and also sports a profusion of friezes from the epics.

This posed problem for the district administration as discharge of water from the lake inundated the nearby villages, he said, adding to divert the entire water coming from Ariyalur and Perambalur districts directly to Kollidam river, the district administration had readied a project and sent the same to the government for its approval.
