Schooled in Tamil? Government job easier

The Tamil Nadu government will reserve 20 per cent seats to candidates educated under Tamil medium for direct recruitment in the state’s services, an ordina nce said on Tuesday.
In an extraordinary gazette, it said the decision was taken considering that Tamil- medium students got “very little chances” of jobs through the UPSC, in other state governments or in the private sector.
The government will soon bring in legislation on this, also given that a majority of schools and colleges in the state was using Tamil — one of the world’s most anc ient languages — as the educational medium.
The ordinance recalled that the June World Classical Tamil Conference did pass a resolution on such a preferential appointment. The prime objective was conducting the state administration with “transpare ncy in the vocal language of the masses” in “accordance with the provisions of the Constitution” and other laws of the land.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa was today summoned by a city court to appear before it on October 15 in a defamation complaint filed by son-in-law of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin over her alleged derogatory remarks against him.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R Killivalavan ordered issue of summons to Jayalalithaa, taking cognisance of the complaint by V Sabarisan, CEO of a private research and technology based firm, seeking to punish her for criminal defamation.
Sabarisan accused the former chief minister of “making scathing, scurrilous, malicious and defamatory remarks” against him in connection with the sale of spurious drugs and chemicals while addressing a public meeting on July 13 in Coimbatore.
Describing the statement as false, frivolous and untrue, he prayed the court to take cognisance of his complaint and punish Jayalalithaa under IPC sections 500 and 501 (relating to defamation).

Police announced certain modifications in vehicular movement
Posted by Admin Madurai Tamilnadu India in Chennai, Departments, Health, Information, Other, Public, Transport, government, modification, police on September 8th, 2010

The police have announced certain modifications in vehicular movement to ease traffic congestion in and around Cenotaph Road. The modifications, being introduced on an experimental basis, will come in to effect from Friday morning.
As per the changes, Cenotaph Road will be made ‘one way’ with entry for vehicles only from the Anna Salai side. The G.K. Moopanar flyover would also be made ‘one way’ with entry only for vehicles coming from the Anna Salai side. The stretch of Chamiers Road from Turnbulls junction to Anna Salai would be ‘one way’ with entry for vehicles only from Turnbulls junction.
Entry for vehicles, coming from Teynampet, Saidapet and Venkatnarayana Road, into Chamiers Road at Nandanam junction would be prohibited. These vehicles instead have to take Cenotaph Road.
Vehicles coming on Anna Salai from Teynampet side and bound for Venkatnarayana Road would not be allowed to take a right turn at the Nandanam junction. ‘U’ turn would also not be allowed for these vehicles at the Nandanam junction.
Vehicles coming from Kotturpuram and proceeding to Anna Salai and beyond have to take the service road of the G.K. Moopanar flyover, Chamiers Road, Nandanam junction to reach Anna Salai.
There would be no change in the route for vehicles from Kotturpuram to T.T.K. Road and those coming from T.T.K. Road-Chamiers Road and bound for Kotturpuram.
Route developmental funds through panchayats
Posted by Admin Madurai Tamilnadu India in Communication, Departments, Health, Information, Other, Political, government, tamilnadu on September 8th, 2010

The central government is planning to route developmental funds through panchayats in order to wean people away from Maoism and prevent youth from joining the rebels, Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V.Narayanasamy said Tuesday.
This was discussed at a meeting of te Planning Commission chaired by the prime minister some days ago. The government is also looking at the possibility of allowing the tribals to use the minor forest produce, Narayanasamy told reporters here.
He also said that the government hopes to introduce the women’s reservation bill in the Lok Sabha during the winter session after discussing the issue at an all-party meeting.
“The prime minister has agreed to call the meeting and we hope to introduce the bill in the winter session. A discussion on population stabilisation is also slated during the winter session,” Narayanasamy said.
Queried about the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, 2010, he said: “Our allies have expressed their views on the bill. They have said market rates have to be paid while acquiring the land. A new bill has to be drafted. The winter session may also see introduction of bills relating to allowing foreign universities in India, insurance and pension sector.”
Condemning Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for disrupting Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings during the monsoon session, Narayanasamy said that the main opposition party wasted 45 precious hours of the two houses.
He said BJP leaders should be ready for discussion and not for disruption.
DGP post: Discontent seems to be brewing
Posted by Admin Madurai Tamilnadu India in Chennai, Court, Departments, Health, government, police, tamilnadu on September 8th, 2010

Discontent seems to be brewing among the senior police officials over the appointment of DGP Letika Saran, with yet another top official approaching the court’s accusing the State government of suppressing facts before High Court.
Falling in line with his senior batchmate R Nataraj, DGP Fire and Rescue Services department Vijayakumar, director, Sardar Vallabai Patel National Police Acadmey, Hyderabad said he had not suppressed information as to whether he was considered for post of Tamilnadu police chief from the Madras High Court and alleged the State government had done so.
Replying to a supplemental affidavit filed by the Principal Secretary, State home department, in connection with a petition challenging the appointment of Letika Saran as Tamilnadu DGP, K Vijay Kumar also contended that he had never stated that he was unwilling to serve as DGP.
Submitting that the post of DGP and head of the State police force was a promotional one and that he had a right to be considered for it, he described as ‘incorrect’ the insinuation that he had suddenly got involved in the petition.
Vijay Kumar, (respondent in the petition), said that on being informed that during the hearing of the petition his name had been mentioned he had filed an affidavit ‘very clearly’ seeking the court’s intervention to ascertain whether or not he was considered for selection to the post of DGP.
Contending that his bonafide had been unfairly questioned by the Principal Secretary (second respondent in the petition filed by R Nataraj, DGP and Director of the State fire services), Vijay Kumar said he felt there was no need to make a representation to the government since Nataraj was a senior batch mate.
Stating that the Secretary’s averment that he had gone to the academy on his own volition ‘is correct’, Vijay Kumar, a 1975 batch officer, said the ‘presumptuous inference’ that it was ‘synonymous with my unwillingness to serve in the cadre’ was ‘shocking and legally incorrect’.
He said that when the question arose as to what his stand was in the court, he felt it was his duty to submit an affidavit.
Submitting that the post of Director of the academy, which was in the rank of DGP was downgraded to the rank of ADGP to help him assume charge as director, he claimed that it was a suitable recognition of his services by helping him succeed an officer four years his senior.
The post of Director of the academy had since been upgraded to the rank of DGP after his empanelment, he said. The secretary was ‘either unaware or feigns ignorance or has chosen not to bring to the notice’ of the court the empanelment rules and posts in the union government vis-à-vis the States.
The State Government ignored various facts and had not placed the correct facts before the court but had added insult to injury by saying that he had ‘suppressed’ facts, he alleged.
He said the averments suspecting his bonafides were ‘malicious, mischievous and are totally denied’.
