Suriya clarifies, “My priority is Tamil.”

Five years ago Suriya received a text from Ram Gopal Varma saying “I loved the intensity with which you essayed your character in the film ‘Kakha Kakha’.” Subsequently Suriya met RGV through his wife Jyothika. “It was a surprise for me when we met and since then we have been in touch. I invited him for my marriage and he was there on the day I tied the knot,” says the hunk who is looking even more sensational with his haute-packs.
Rattha Charitram
Suriya, known to honour his friendship and fiercely protect his friends, says, “Mumbai is where my inlaws stay and I visit them often. When in Mumbai, Ramu (RGV) and I catch up and he used to send me special prints of his films to watch and give him feedback.”

Though Bollywood offers poured in, the actor was looking for the right script and ‘Rattha Charitram’, a tri-lingual film (Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) happened. “I’m so happy to take the credit that RGV is making his debut in Tamil through me. The character is inspired from a real life incident of a person who lived in Andhra Pradesh. The film delves into the twists and turns of what happens when an ordinary person goes through an extraordinary situation and how his mental state transforms.

“We’re almost close to 100 days of shooting and in a few more days we will wrap up. It’s not just blood, gore and fierce shooting; it’s equally about the emotional journey the character undergoes. The cinematic quality coupled with the unique format will keep the Tamil audiences happy,” says Suriya.

About the new film, director/filmmaker Ramgopal Varma says, “The film is a story that is a melting pot of energy, aesthetics and a strong script. We’ve done our best to do justice to the story. The film is likely to hit the theatres in August and it also stars Vivek Oberoi and Priyamani.”

For Suriya, this is his first film in Hindi and he thanks the director for giving him the role. “RGV told me that he liked the Tamil version than the other two,” gushes the actor. “I was given a brief of the character (Suri) and I loved it.”

He reveals, “I didn’t go to prison, lock myself in to know how a prisoner would be. I just envisioned the spirit of the character.”

The actor was taught Hindi by a professor in Madurai and also from his wife Jo with which he managed to deliver dialogues in Hindi. The celluloid god of Kollywood feels this film would be one of his most memorable roles. Wading through rumours of his keen interest in Bollywood, Suriya clarifies, “My priority is Tamil.”

Aish smitten by Tamil bug

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who started her film career with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Iruvar’ in 1997 has come a long way. The pretty who waited and insisted to have a launch only by Mani Ratnam has said she is ‘confident’ about doing more Tamil films now after the multilingual ‘Raavan’.
Raavanan
At the ‘Raavan’ music launch Aishwarya stated, “I understand a bit of Tamil and speak a bit of it. For me, it is very important that I understand the meaning of my dialogues before I deliver them. I can’t just mug up the dialogues. So for ‘Raavanan’ (Tamil title), I made sure I knew what I was saying and yes, I have improved a lot on the language and I am confident about doing more Tamil stuff in future.”

Her confidence in Tamil films was over flowing when she told media “After ‘Raavanan’, it was like – ‘Come on! Bring on Robot (her ‘Endhiran’ film with superstar Rajini).”

Hmm, looks like the diva will be the next popular crossover actress, in line with Sridevi, Jaya Prada…

Paiyya Tamil Cinema’s Number One Heroine

You mentioned that the role was something you could relate to. In what way?

It was in terms of the characterisation. It was not over the top but subtle.

How has the reaction to the film been? Are you happy?

I am very happy and satisfied with the end result. The film has shaped much better than at the narration level. It’s an entertaining film and I knew that it’s not going to be a different, path-breaking film. It’s a fun film which can be enjoyed.

There was lot of excitement and expectation over this film. People messaged me even before the release wishing me all the best. People went with an expectation and it was fulfilled.

You are now working with Karthi again in a Tamil film…

Yes, I am working on a project which is the remake of the Telugu film Vikramarkudu.

Is the film titled? Is it being adapted to suit the Tamil audience?

It’s still untitled. It’s pretty much the same. Some of the scenes look better in Tamil. It’s been a week since we started the shoot.

You have acted with both the brothers Suriya and Karthi. What’s the difference between the two in terms of acting?

They are both different as actors. But both are dedicated. Suriya has spent many years in the industry. He does roles which have a lot of variation and which are physically demanding too. He played a college student and an old man in Vaaranam Aayiram. What he has achieved as an actor is amazing. I look up to him and I am awestruck by his work.

Karthi achieved with his first film Paruthiveeran what others would take 10 films to achieve. He had an image makeover in Paiyya. I noticed he lives with his character from beginning to end. He is passionate and I’m sure he will do amazing work in future.

CM Family members were present in full attendance at the veena recital of Ezhilarasi

Members of Tamilnadu’s First Family, including Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M K Alagiri, gathered in full strength at a musical performance in Chennai last evening. The music show featured by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s granddaughter Ezhilarasi Jothimani.
Ezhilarasi Jothimani veena recital
In straight contrast to reports that there existed a feud between Stalin and Alagiri on taking over the DMK leadership and family members were divided over it, all the four generations of the Karunanidhi-Maran family were present in full attendance and seen chatting with each other at the veena arangetram of Ezhilarasi, daughter of Karunanidhi’s older daughter Selvi and nephew Murasoli Selvam.

In his address, Karunanidhi, punning on the word ‘kalai’, said that family was not just an artistes’ family, but an inseparable one. (‘Yengal kudumbam kalai kudumbam mattumalla; kalaiyaadha kudumbam’).
The Chief Minister said it was his ‘prayer’, even though he did not believe in God, that his family should remain united. ‘Our family could not and should not be disturbed and should instead remain united,’ he said.

The octogenarian was all praise for his granddaughter. ‘Ezhilarasi has accomplished well in such a short time. I think I shall henceforth ask her to play the veena every time I try to solve a serious problem,’ he said in a lighter vein and added: ‘But this does not imply that I shall be undergoing grave trials at frequent intervals.’

The DMK president also got a peck on the cheek from daughter Selvi, who greeted him on the occasion of her daughter Ezhilarasi’s veena recital .

Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal and kin Murasoli Selvam, Selvi Selvam, Amirtham, M K Tamilarasu, Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, Sun Network chief Kalanithi Maran, Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, Durga Stalin, Kanthi Alagiri, music maestro Ilayaraja and vocalist Nithyasree Mahadevan were among those who participated.

Norm with so-called youthful movies, “Paiyaa”

Karthi, Tamannaah Bhatia, Milind Soman, Sonia Deepti; Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja; Director: N. Linguswamy; Cinematographer: Madhi; Editor: Antony; Rating: **
paiyaa
As is the norm with so-called youthful movies, “Paiyaa” hero Shiva, played by Karthi who is seen for the first time on screen with a costume that is not dirty, is jobless but couldn’t care less. He is full of fun and enjoys life. Shiva meets a beautiful girl Charulatha (Tamannaah) and instantly falls for her. Shiva’s successive coincidental meetings with the girl increases his passion for her.

Shiva finds out that Charulatha’s life is in danger. He pledges to save her from the clutches of the goons hired by her stepmother.

The twist in the tale is that Shiva too is in danger. A Mumbai gang guns for him on account of previous enmity. Shiva, thanks to some tiring stunt sequences, finally manages to save the girl and himself.

For most part for the film, the script travels in cars and this is the only difference between “Paiyaa” and other such movies. Otherwise it is predictable and hardly exciting. The hero saving a girl from the clutches of a villain gang with his muscle power is nothing new to Tamil cinema. In fact, we are witnessing such stories almost every week.

It is quite sad that a director like Linguswamy with proven record of making interesting commercial movies like “Run” and “Sandakozhi” has made such a damp squib.

The interesting aspect in the whole film is that Siva does not express his love to his girl believing that true love would express itself. Ironically, the girl doesn’t understand his feeling throughout the movie.

Since the entire problem is solved with the power of muscles, there is no work left for the script writer indeed. Tamaanaah’s generous skin show, especially in the rain song, and the joyful attitude of Shiva are there for the director to drag the film for 150 minutes.

In addition to this there is Yuvan’s music and Madhi’s excellent camera work that help the proceedings.

In his modern avatar Karthi looks smart and charming, but he does not get any scope to act and hence there is not much to write about his acting.

Tamannaah is given little scope to display her acting credentials. Linguswamy has wasted Milind Soman.

The highlights of the film are music, cinematography, and Antony’s editing.

“Paiyaa” is a disappointing show, as Linguswamy has restored to cliched script rather than providing something new. The movie looks sleek, thanks to the high technical values but fares poor in substance with insipid story and script.

Tamizh, DVD on Tamil ethos launched in Kanimozhi MP

‘Tamizh,’ a DVD collage of film music, classical dance and educational nuggets, which seeks to capture the Tamil ethos, was launched here on Sunday.
TAMIZH DVD RELEASE_1
‘Tamizh’ has been conceived by Bharathanatyam exponent Madhuvanthi Arun and her spouse Arun Vaddi as an exposition on the culture of the Tamil-speaking people by delving into their religion, arts, folklore and social life.

Kanimozhi, MP, launched the DVD (brought out by Swathi Soft Solutions) by handing over the first copies to N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu and Bharathanatyam exponent Padma Subrahmanyam.

Ms. Kanimozhi stressed the importance of preserving the art forms and cultural values that were symbolic of the Tamil identity.

It was laudable that the DVD sought to reach out to the younger generation, many of whom unfortunately did not know to read or write Tamil, she said.

She hoped that the production would serve as a bridge in promoting better understanding of the Tamil ethos among the youth.

Mr. Ram said the concept behind ‘Tamizh’ raised the issue of the importance of cultural change as a process that was taking place in an uneven and iniquitous manner among countries and within societies.

Noting that it would be a calamity to lose the distinctive characteristics in the quest for globalisation, Mr. Ram said the challenge was in balancing the tensions between preserving the traditional and the classical against the need to accommodate the new.

Ms. Padma Subrahmanyam said bringing out a DVD on the creative effort would help reach out to a larger audience.

Madhuvanthi Arun said putting together the DVD package was a learning experience on Tamil culture and heritage. Though ‘Tamizh’ had been performed on stage earlier, a DVD production was being launched to reach the theme to a wider audience.

The film music ranging from K.B. Sundarambal to A.R. Rahman was filtered from about 2,000 choices and used to complement the dance performances, she said.

Y.G. Parthasarathy, Dean and Director PSBB Group of Schools and S.B. Khanthan, Creative Director of the production, dancers and other creative artistes involved in the production were felicitated.
