Autorickshaw drivers observed a fast here on Tuesday in protest against inaction by the authorities in settting right the deplorable condition of roads in the town.
Town president of Central Trade Union Congress G. Kumar and town secretary S. Nagarajan led the protest. S. Manibharathi, All India Trade Union Congress’s auto wing district secretary, N. Sivaji, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district secretary and 100 others took part. Most of the autorickshaws stayed off the roads as a mark of protest.
The drivers said that almost all roads had become slushy, causing hardship to road users.
The authorities were apprised of the situation many times but they took no step to solve the problem.
Citing underground drainage work for the bad condition of roads, the authorities refused to listen to the numerous petitions. If that was the reason, the roads should have been re-laid where such works had been completed
